i put some pennies in my filter to get rid of my pest snails in my 10g. this also seemed to have killed off the remainder of the black worms living in the gravel (for about 2 years now ). anyway, when i took the pennies out of the filter, the black worms came back. not only that, but they're everywhere now! i mean, they've had the BIGGEST population explosion i have ever seen why didn't they all die from the copper treatment like the snails?

try getting some yo yo loaches for your tank, they do an awesome job of controling snails and since they are bottom feeders will eat the blackworms too, almost any bottom feeders will eat the blackworms, at least that has been my experience.

i don't care if the blackworms stay or get eaten, i just want to know why they came back so strong after they seemed to have succumbed to the copper treatment that got rid of the snails. i didn't gravel vac any worm bodies (that i know of) when they were "gone" during the treatment and suddenly they are back with a vengeance

Perhaps you didn't have enough of a water flow through the gravel to allow the copper to get to everywhere that the worms were. And, if not all the blackworms were killed and all the competition was removed, it would make sense that there would be a population boom.

Just my couple of little coppery coins.
