I took my 5 and 7 year old kids back to where I grew up, Birds Hill Manitoba, and we walked down to the gravel pit pond (lake). The first submerged rock I saw, I lifted it, and there they were. I was scared but thought, if I could do it 30 years ago, I can do it now. I caught one in each hand, and plunked them on the beach. :-) Too bad we had just bought a rainbow crab.

We put them on the shore, and they put their claws up and froze in position. After a few minutes, I picked them up and put them in the water... so the kids could see how fast they swim. :-)

Yeah, they shoot away backwards. It's too fast to see, but the tail just flicks down and they go a meter or two per pump. They look just like a lobster, so my son was amazed because he was expecting a crayfish to be a fish. I think crawdad is another term.

I'm sure it is illegal here in Canada to keep them as pets but it would be tempting. Since you can buy them in pet stores the only problem would be getting caught taking them out of the water. Getting your car impounded to save $9 would not be too bright. Maybe if you have a fishing license it is covered. They are a nice pink/brown color. You can buy them as live fishing bait come to think of it.

Yikes, I asked an big outdoorsman executive here at work about the legal issue, and he said "hmmm, we caught bucket fulls last week, boiled them and had them with butter."
