Maybe this is a daft question...but i got home today & thought my crab was lying upside down on the bottom of the tank & so must have died.

Then 10 mins later he walks past about twice the size he was yesterday !!!!

Help???

Yes, crabs don't have a normal skeleton, but an exoskeleton. They need to shed them several times throughout their life, otherwise they won't grow.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

Yep. Crabs, shrimps, lobsters... they all shed their shells occasionally to grow. Then they grow a new one Handy how that works.

Be careful of the other fish in the tank for a few days until his new 'shell' hardens. Aggressive fish can be known to 'attack' the soft tissue.
