I know they are filter feeders and occasionally need a direct feeding via a eye drooper. See the search part of this forum, if you search freshwater clam you should find all the info you need.

Clown loaches probably aren't the best playmates, either. Clowns eat up snails like they're going out of style, and if they get open your clams, they'll be lunch too. A newbie at the shop i used to work at found this out when he put clams in with our loaches, as it was a sand substrate. He was shocked when he came in the next day to find most of the clamshells open and empty.

All loaches will eat clams. My yoyos made off with about a dozen out of 50 before I moved them. Clams can be lifted out of the water just fine. I moved mine around all the time. The main problem is unless you have good water current and lots of small particles in the water the clams will starve. Even if your tank has lots of water movement and food if it has lots of decorations the stupid clams will get stuck behind them and again starve. You also can't treat the tank with any medicines. Not even melafix or they will die. Mine reproduced a few times but eventually they all got killed off. Interesting to watch them bury themselves but then they just sit there and after a few months it gets rather boring. After the first year trying to keep them alive while they did nothing all day was kind of annoying. I wouldn't keep them again unless I set up a river tank specifically designed for clams.
