I'm a huge fan of crayfish. They are so much fun to watch, and they'll keep the substrate much cleaner, as they'll eat anything that falls to the bottom of the tank.

As long as the betta stays near the surface, and the other fish are small and fast, you shouldn't have to worry about the cray eating any of them. The cardinals would probably work, since there would be a school of them all moving quickly - too difficult a target for the cray.

I dont know about that....

My cray will snatch anything in his tank, including bettas and tetras.

I'd say they are very cool to keep but I'm not sure about putting fish in.

The gravel in my cray tank is sooo clean its funny!

You could try but use caution.

EDIT: I know you said no snails have you seen Limpets???

can anyone suggest a suitable invert to share a 15g tank with a male betta and a school or smaller fish (possibly cardinal or rummynose tetra or glowlight rasbora).

not snails.

Take a look through this site (I would suggest viewing all eight pages) to get a sense of what invertebrates you find interesting.

The "marbled shrimp" you speak of is likely an Atyid, probably Atyopsis spp.

When i had my Cray I kept it with an African Butterfly Fish and the Cray just couldn`t reach the Butterfly, only time the Cray could was durin water changes and that sometimes was a bit of a scary time for the butterfly and me

The butterfly survived for a good while with the cray and then the cray just died, he was about 9 inches though

Red Claw Crayfish if any of you wondering

i am looking at a shrimp that is surely not big enough to be a threat to any of the fish, just big enough not to be dinner.

Ha ha ha, it's me that deserves the "good godding". I will admit that I love crays and had no problems with one in my community tank. It only killed one fish during it's lifetime (a slow, long farlowella - I shoulda seen it coming), and it left countless others alone. It even shared a cave with a spotted raphael! Maybe mine was just a peaceful exception. Who knows.

At any rate, I may get another cray for another one of my tanks here soon. I miss my old cray and want a new one.

Good God people, please understand crayfish should NEVER go with ANY fish unless you want a slaughter fest. They can find many ways to get to your fish, and they will eventually.

It may just depend on the cray. I had 3 zebra danios in with mine, and he never even bothered to reach for any of them. They were too fast for him. Obviously, it's still risky with the tetras and the betta, but it may work. You'll just have to keep a close eye on them all.

I agree with you about the gravel. It's kinda ridiculous how clean the cray can keep the tank. He would even lift up rocks to make sure he didn't miss any extra food! Without him in the tank now, I have to vacuum the gravel much more often.

I think I'm gonna get another one soon...
