My fiddler crabs became tame enough that I could drop food into their mouths, so I decided to see what they would do with my hand in the tank. They'll crawl onto my hand and eat but I want to make sure it's safe for them. Any thoughts?

I can't see why it wouldn't be safe. Mudskippers will become tame enough to allow their keeper to handle them, and it seems that your crabs have become the same way. Crabs don't have slime coats to disturb, so I don't see a problem with holding them.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

Would the same concept be applied with red clawed crabs? Also, I have a 5 Gal tank that isn't being used, should I create a habitat specificly for crabs where they can climb out to get a breath of fresh air, or are they ok in the 10Gal with the other fish?

Thanks for the info,

I think it's perfectly fine. Make sure you don't have lotion or anything on your hands first. I handle snails out of the water all the time. They'll open up and cruise around on my hand. And, they have much more sensitive skin than a crab would (who has an exoskeleton).

red, crabs would be more suited to a species-only 5 gallon than a community 10 gallon. They can and will eat small fish and will attack ones that are even bigger than itself. Remmber, those claws can be quite dangerous. A 5 gallon would be a perfect set up for crabs.

And, for the origional topic, I think it would be fine. I mean, you handle them when you go to the beach, right? They don't die or anything.
