not laying eggs | |
judz Enthusiast Posts: 256 Kudos: 160 Votes: 5 Registered: 06-Jun-2005 | my large mystery snail looks like it has eggs to lay but since i dont ahve any room at the top of my tank it has never laid them should i leave some room so it can lay them and they dont rott inside it? |

longhairedgit Fish Guru Lord of the Beasts Posts: 2502 Kudos: 1778 Votes: 29 Registered: 21-Aug-2005 | Most snails prefer to lay eggs either in substrates or on plants- if you post a pic or a link we might be able to identify it and tell you its preferred method of laying. A few snails are also unable to successfully lay without insemination by another snail- not usually problematic because a lot of snails are hermaphroditic and it only takes more than one for things to be a success. |

They cannot lay eggs unless you drop the water at least 2" but more like 4" for the larger species. Also you need 2 snails and they have to be opposite gender or the eggs will not be fertile. |

I heard one story of a snail that climbed out of the tank and over to a piece of wood furniture where it laid it's eggs and then somehow made it back into the tank. Most of the time though they don't make it back to the tank. I just found one today laying on the carpet behind the tank and last week one fell from the top of my 90g(4') onto the carpet and somehow lived. I put her back in and she started crawling around. If your tank isn't on carpet there's a good chance they'll crack their shells up. |
