Hold the snail with the top of the spiral up and the opening towards you. Look at the angle between the body of the shell and the opening. If it's 90 degrees, it's a bridgesii. If it's less than 90 degrees, it's a cacaliculata. If it's greater than 90 Degrees, it's a paludosa.

Seems like one type of the purple Pomacea bridgesii...he has a vERY dark shell w/ a purplish tint, and a very pale yellow-white body. Stumper.

Try looking at the pictures of different colors of cana and brig. Maybe you can find your snail.

hmm... a dark snail with a light foot.. wherever did you find that lol. That's not always easy to get. Just make sure your snail is bridgessi not cana before you add live plants. They look almost identical although a cana can get huge and a brig will be about 2inches or so. Canas favorite activity is destroying planted tanks lol. Check applesnail.net to id snail types or colors.

I'm thinking about adding a snail to my 15 gallon. I've never had a snail before. I know they can breed like crazy, which is why I only want to get one. Is this a good idea? Do I have to feed it anything special? Here's my choices...which do you recommend and why?

Albino Snail
(Pomacea sp.)
Apple Snail
(Pomacea (effusa) glauca)
Black Mystery Snail
(Pomacea bridgesi)
Gold Inca Snail
(Pomacea sp.)
Ramshorn Snail
(Marisa cornuarietis)

ThAnKs!!!
~FF~

EDIT: do you have to acclimate snails like fish?

Try applesnail.net

"Albino Snail
(Pomacea sp.)
Apple Snail
(Pomacea (effusa) glauca)
Black Mystery Snail
(Pomacea bridgesi)
Gold Inca Snail
(Pomacea sp.)
Ramshorn Snail
(Marisa cornuarietis)"

ALL of these are apple snails and need male and female to breed. Even Marisa

I have no real plants, but would like to get some in the near future. Unfortunately, I think I'm going to be stuck with whatever my LFS has in.

Out of what you listed, I'd pick the black mystery snail, especially if you have any real plants in the tank.

Apple Snail don't breed like crazy & you can keep 1 in your tank.

They'll eat any leftover food & vegetables.

you can feed them any kind of vegetable like zuchini, squash, etc. also you don't have to acclimate a snail to the tank, just drop them in

The first four will only reproduce if you keep them in male/female groups, and even then, slowly. Ramshorns, however, reproduce like crazy. I personally prefer the albinos, because of their beautiful pure white feet/shells. The prettiest mollusks I've ever seen.
