By two and a half, I assume you mean gallons?

In any case, it depends on how aggressive the girls are... I'd lean towards one or two in this case, because a 2.5 can be a bit small for three full grown girls.

IME, the girls have larger bodies than the boys. Of course, I've had some REALLY big girls. Even short-tailed males are dwarfed by some of the big girls, so you want to keep that in mind.

My sister keeps a single male in a 2.5 and personally, it looks a bit empty. I keep my males in 2 gallon kritter keepers and for whatever reason, the mere half gallon difference makes it the perfect sized tank. Maybe it's the shape of the tank. *shrugs*

I would go with just one in a tank that size. I tried putting betta girls in much larger tanks - a ten and even a 29, and they went after each other and had to put back in their seperate bowls. They can be pretty nasty to one another, but it depends on the personality. Females from the same spawn usually do best, but how can you know if that is the case? I even had a betta girl kill some of my other smaller fish.

agreed, in a 2 1/2g tank, only one. i myself had got lucky and had 4 in my 55g tank and all they did was ignore each other.

Fish tanks are an expensive addiction
