Just thought that you might like to know that there are now 6 newly described betta species. These fish had been known for some time, but had not been officially described/identified and named, and were ging by Betta sp. "blah" type names.

Betta antoni (AKA sp. Sanggau)
Betta mandor (AKA foerschi Mandor)
Betta krataios (AKA sp. Kapuas)
Betta uberis (AKA sp. Pangkalanbun)
Betta compuncta
Betta ideii (AKA sp. sp. Pulau Laut)

There are some photos if you click on the links (more photos should be available in the coming months )

Thanks to the Genus_betta list and Aquaworld for providing the information.

Any idea on what group these species belong to (i.e. mouthbrooders or nest-builders)?

I'm fairly sure that most are mouthbrooders, but I'll do a bit more research and find out.

B. uberis appears to be a bubblenester from the claret group, but again, not 100% certain.

Thanks for the info.

Some of those are some very nice looking fish. I really like the Betta foerschi "Tangkiling".

Is there any hope that some of these will become available to the hobbyist trade?

Jim

Some already are, but not large scale.
B. uberis has popped up a few times I believe. Most often you need to contact someone from Thailand or Singapore to locate and ship the fish to your local importer. It can be a bit of an exercise, but its becoming more and more common. Check on Aquabid or contact your importer and see what they can do from their end. Its more expensive than getting them from a fish shop, but it makes sure you get what you ask for, and that they haven't been sitting in an LFS for years.

Also, if you look on the IBC site, there are options to buy and trade wilds without having to be an IBC member

I doubt any of those will become available for quite some time... It is hard enough as it is trying to find anything other than the fancy morphs of Betta splendens.

Betta imbellis and Betta pugnax are the pretty much the only species I know of that are imported into the hobby with any regularity. And especially if those new species are mouthbrooders, there seems to be even less of a demand for those types.

definitely my fave too Theresa, and the most accurate IMO.
