The gold variety is a hybrid of other gouramis and is a very hardy and versatile fish. They are generally tolerant of other fish but males can be aggressive towards each other though. I kept a gold gourami for about six years and it grew to around 5".

Sorry, forgot to mention.... males usually have a longer dorsal fin than females. Good luck

I have a male, that is about 4 1/2 inches - I've had him for about 2 years and he's been through hell (literally!) when I first got the tank - it was a 10 gal with way to many fish, and he was part of it. - yet he still lives!

This thing wouldn't die (and still hasn't! )
I have only one and I think he's the greatest, he does have small problems (medical related) that come and go (was my fault he got them )

Okay - sorry for the incoherant rantish

2 pair in a 40G tank will work fine, that's what I started out with....I've sold 100 of the offspring and still have quite a few, and a couple of unexpected grandkids. I have higher stocking levels in my 40's now, but this is not ideal, even though the fish have grown up together.
