I got a betta two weeks ago. I purchased Omega One Betta Buffet Pellets. He ate one the first day and hasn't ate since. How often do they eat? Is there a better food that he would prefer? Thanks everyone

some can be fussy.

Most will take hikari betta biogold and almost all will take frozen brine shrimp or bloodworms, but starting them on those can meran that they won't go back to pelletted food.

He will be fine without food for a few days, but keep trying as most do come around. If he goes more than 4 days, consider getting some freeze dried bloodworms or frozen bloodworms and feeding them every 4 days while offerring the pellets on the other days. That should give him a chance to take the pellets without his body condition or health sufferring too much.

Hi Callatya,
Got the same question. My new one doesn't even look at the pelltes. The only times ive succeeded seeing him eating something are when i threw in some FD bloodworms. But FD feeds cant be made staple diets (risk of constipation)..
These creatures are really choosy with the menu...

I tried the frozen brine a week ago and he didn't look at it either (same as the pellets). I guess I'll have to go get some bloodworms. I tried FD Plankton (MiniKrill). If I break it up into "bite size" pieces he's eat it but spit it back out.

hikari betta bio-gold i have found very effective.

for my picky bettas, i melt frozen blood worms in a cup of water and add some to my finger and drip my finger in, they will usually take a "curious" bite at first, but then come back to finsh it off.

I have also found that getting them fired up not only gets their metabloism rate going, but also makes them really hungry, so i would put two of my bettas near eachother let them flare for awhile. and then add a pellet, they will usually have a battle of who can eat more.

something that i have found effective over the years.

If they are small fish, you could try micropellets. I had some that had difficulty with the standard pellet size. they just couldn't fit it in their mouths

A lot of breeders use only FD BW, but they usually feed sparingly and fast the fish every few days. If you absolutely need to, you could try that Supplement with live food on occasion to break it up a bit

Also, I've found that mine like playing with sinking wafers and pellets. I toss one in and let them maul it before I do a WC (its a bit messy) and they seem to enjoy it
