br0ke_1T Hobbyist Posts: 98 Kudos: 51 Votes: 0 Registered: 19-Aug-2005 | I have just found something, there are several different species of betta, these are: Scientific name-----Common name Betta bellica------- Striped Fighter Betta brederi- ------Breder's Betta Betta coccina- ------Wine Red Betta Betta picta ---------Java Fighter Betta pugnax--------- Penang Mouthbrooding Fighter Betta splendens------ betta, Siamese Fighting Fish Betta Imbelis-------- Peacefull Betta I was just wondering if anyone here has kept these different species of betta, or could get any info on them, I've tried googling them but only verry basic info comes, I've also tried to contact Faith from www.bettatalk.com but I can't find out how. (you have to pay nowadays lol) I think Faith only keeps betta splendens but im unsure. I have a 3 bettas 2 of which i am quite sure are betta splendens but the other, I am unsure, Also some of the male bettas out of this group may have short finns, which leaves me with (maybe) 1 female and 2 males, the one that looks duifferent my male chases more so.... I really don't know. TIA Once I have gathered lots of info on this i will make a thread about it. |

I have kept B. sp. mahachai and B imbellis, and the other week I found what I *think* might be B simplex at a local shop. Wild bettas are totally awesome, if you have the time and space, and you like watching brownish fish (well, they aren't totally brownish, but in comparison to fancy splendens they are ) There are even more species than you have listed too, and local variations where those species have been isolated and have changed somewhat to suit the specific conditions. Here is a link to the international organisation that is trying to document and preserve the species. Hope its interesting for you [link=http://www.ibc-smp.org/species/index.html]http://www.ibc-smp.org/species/index.html" style="COLOR: #990000[/link] |

My favorite is cocina I have a cool strain of splendens though, instead of a mix of colors in the tank, it has the colors radiating out from it's body. |
