Betta and Paradise wont spawn | |
ladiejl Big Fish Posts: 492 Kudos: 204 Votes: 23 Registered: 27-Feb-2003 | My male paradise has been building bubble nest and chasing my fenale all around. She will not give into him. I have read a lot about them since I got them and Ive only read how they are very, very easy to spawn. Ive lowereed the water, added spawning supplements, raised the temp but nothing!! I put their food right beside the bubble nest, hoping shed inspect it but if she did, I didnt notice. Im afraid hell just keep chasing her until she becomes really stressed out. Anything I can try??? I also tried to breed my bettas. Since Ive had them, I have only saw one of them build a nest. I have tried all three of them with the same female but nothing happens. The same fish is the only one who build a nest while with this female. One of my males actually swam around in the tank with her as he would with any other fish. He didnt even chase her!! I guess Im a failure at breeding fish. It never works. I did the whole betta set up with 6 inches of water, the heater at 80, spawning fluid, cups.....everything. UGH!!!!!!! |

If he's stressing her out she also won't be in good condition for breeding which is why keeping a male and female paradise in the same tank doesn't always work so well. It always worked best for me to either keep them seperate and then move the female to the males tank with plenty of hiding places on the opposite side from his bubble nest or put both in a large container(40-60gallons). Mine all bred at low temperatures(74-78F). None of my tanks or containers had heaters. They are more of a cooler water fish and won't mind if their tank temp drops down into the 60s. The fry do hatch and grow faster at higher temps though. Last edited by sham at 13-Dec-2005 00:11 |

Chop the bottom off it and use a soldering iron to burn some holes in it to allow the male to "smell" her. This is pretty important Put the male in the 10 gallon, and leave him there for 2 days by himself, then add the cone and add the female, and continue conditioning them for about a week, maybe more. When the female is full of eggs and dancing with her head down, then you can let her go, but not before. You need to build up that passion to nest if they know they can have each other, they don't get nearly as excited about the whole thing The tank should be at about 84*F, and if you can, I'd get rid of any gravel and run a sponge filter, as the UGF can trap eggs and fry in the substrate and make it hard for the male to pick them up. |

ladiejl Big Fish Posts: 492 Kudos: 204 Votes: 23 Registered: 27-Feb-2003 | There is not a substrate in the tank. The tank is set at 83. I have added another male in a breeder net but still nothing. How else do you condition them with food? Can you only use live black worms? If so, I can forget about breeding them. I am soooo afraid of worms. One male, she has torn his tail up. Another swims happily along with her in perfect harmony. The other could care less. |

Earthworm flakes are also an option |

They are good for variety but I've never had a fish condition well on mostly brine shrimp. Frozen bloodworms and freeze dried foods have always worked much better. Except for those darn sparkling gouramis who refuse to even make bubblenests despite displaying and arguing over the females. I love the colors they have now from all the frozen foods I've filled them with but I wish they'd also make some baby sparkling gouramis. |
