For a 10g perhaps a pair of cherry barbs or some other small schooling fish. How it works out depends on the temperament of your betta. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |

longhairedgit Fish Guru Lord of the Beasts Posts: 2502 Kudos: 1778 Votes: 29 Registered: 21-Aug-2005 | Ive seen lots of people suggest unsuitable community setups for ADF's, but this one could very well work. One betta and a couple of ADF's might work well in a 10-15 gal. Competition for food and water disturbance would be minimal, and if the betta isnt especially aggressive it could be a good arrangement. You might get a fat betta though. Depends if he just eats what he needs or if he gorges himself to exploding point. . A bigger tank can mean feeding can be better segregated, and its not the worst setup as the ADF's will hunt the lower regions and the betta will feed mostly at the top. |

I also have 1 otto (his friend died). Charlie, the betta, builds bubble nests weekly now. Before he got tankmates, he had never built me a bubble nest. I guess he's very happy now! If you go with the 5g, then the ADF would be a better choice. |

Bar-B Hobbyist Posts: 51 Kudos: 27 Votes: 18 Registered: 28-Mar-2006 | Frog! My mind was on fish, I never even considered a frog! If I put one or two with the Betta, do the frogs need a platform to come out of the water? And how big exactly does one get? Thanks kj for the frog site. 120 GAL. Aqua Newbie n MS Hobbyist Posts: 102 Votes: 1 Registered: 01-Jan-2006 | I have a recently vacated 10 gallon which was the former home to a pair of swordtails and a rubber lipped pleco (who just moved to a new 20 G Long). I have 1 male betta that is currently living alone in a 3 gallon. I was considering moving the betta to the old 10 and getting him some "friends." I like the idea of the harlies. How many would you suggest? How well do they get along with the betta? |

GirlieGirl8519 Fish Master *Malawi Planter* Posts: 1468 Kudos: 1029 Votes: 35 Registered: 25-Mar-2005 | My Harlies get along fine with my Betta. In fact, he is so much happier now that he has tankmates. I have 6 in mine. I think if the tank was heavily planted and you kept up with weekly water changes, you could have 8. Bar-B: One thing you have to know about African Dwarf frogs is that they can be hard to feed. They will eat frozen bloodworms, but you have to make sure you put it right in front of them. They won't go searching for food. That's why I have never kept them. I don't have time to specially feed them. It may be easier than I think though. Here are 2 links I found...not sure how good they are though: Number 1 Number 2 *On the second one...make sure you look at African Dwarf Frogs...and not clawed* |

kj fishy-finn Big Fish Posts: 385 Kudos: 200 Registered: 21-Jan-2004 | I once had a ADF, but he died. I think it may have been because he wasnt getting any food and like what was said before about the fact they dont go looking for food is obviously true. I even read about having to feed them bloodworms from a turkey baster(I think that was what it was-I cant remember). So I would agree with GirlieGirl8519 about the fact that if you dont have the time to specially feed them and give time to feed them properly to make sure they are eating then I wouldnt get one. All the extra work would be worth it since they are very good to keep with a betta and are something different. Also they are pretty cute. kj fishy-finn <*)))>< 20 Gallon Album 5 Gallon Album |

Bar-B Hobbyist Posts: 51 Kudos: 27 Votes: 18 Registered: 28-Mar-2006 | Thanks everyone for all of your ideas. GirlieG and Kj you know after the "hard to feed comments" I got thinking. Actually I forgot to mention that this tall hex tank is going in my kitchen. Do I really want a frog on my kitchen counter? Sorry frogie lovers, but I think I'll stick to a pretty Betta and I think some Harlies. I know, I know you all think the frogs cute! 120 GAL. Also, you might consider guppies (I have kept the fancy varietys of male guppies with Betta splendens, which is the type you generally see in stores.) Good luck with these very cool-looking fish! P.
