DoctorJ Big Fish Posts: 344 Kudos: 1159 Votes: 191 Registered: 13-May-2003 | The other thing about betta food is thata little goes a long way. Bettas are fairly small fish and don't need lots of food. So, a small container will go far. You could also call a friend or family member who lives in another city to buy some for you and mail it. The postage would be cheap! |

There is a DIY somewhere online that tells you how to harvest them. Goodluck with your betta. My filter suck in my betta and kill him instantly |

goldfisher Hobbyist Posts: 96 Votes: 0 Registered: 07-Aug-2004 | Our lfs does have Hikari Betta Gold avaliable. So its either small pellets and flakes and live or frozen foods. Flakes are the other option i have. Do they have to have betta flakes or can they eat tropical flakes ? |

girlunderrainbow Big Fish Posts: 323 Kudos: 230 Votes: 0 Registered: 22-Aug-2003 | I feed Hikari Betta Gold as well and really love it..as a staple. I also feed (liquid and frozen) Brine shrimp and Bloodworms. Mine eat some flake too..depending on the size of your betta, it might be able to eat TINY crickets..or pieces of crickets..and pieces of mealworms..but be careful, bettas can choke I've heard..and I know from personal experience they will try and TRY to swallow something TOO big. |

goldfisher Hobbyist Posts: 96 Votes: 0 Registered: 07-Aug-2004 | No unfortunatly we don't the only place i can get my aquarium products are at my lfs. And i don't like to buy online as i am nervous whether or not i will get it. I recently brought a heater online but am still waiting for the call after a week to finalise wether they have it in stock. If i buy one a my lfs then i get the call i will be a very unhappy fishy ] |

goldfisher Hobbyist Posts: 96 Votes: 0 Registered: 07-Aug-2004 | I hope you don't mind me asking a question as well about this topic ? I have a problem with availability as well. I can't find some of the betta foods. All my lfs has is small containers - not sure of the grams or anything, and they are $6.00 a small container. I think this is a tad over priced. I don't want to order online and flakes are the only other option. |

bubbly Small Fry Posts: 13 Votes: 0 Registered: 02-Aug-2004 | I am thinking of getting a Betta for my 5g tank which is set up and waiting (for me to get all the facts and find a nice one!) But I cannot find food for him anywhere! I've heard they can eat baby cichlid food, but can't even find that! The man in the shop said they can eat tropical flakes (like tetra min) but I heard that they don't like it! He said that they feed theres on it! (not that they have any in often!) Are Bettas ok at a temp of 24c? that is what my tank is maintaining at the moment (I've been checking on it for a week) Also do you think I should empty the tank and start again? It has already sat for one week, and by the time I get a Betta it could be two. How long can I leave the water with nothing in it? Is it best to start again a day or so before I get him, for the temp to reach room temp? Sorry for all the questions, I want to get things right Bubbly xxxxxx |

bubbly Small Fry Posts: 13 Votes: 0 Registered: 02-Aug-2004 | Good thank you, I have been on the search again today, but still not found one! But one of our lfs is having a makeover in the next couple of weeks, and won't be ordering anything. But they said they will have some in each week after that. thanks Bubbly xxxxxx |

DoctorJ Big Fish Posts: 344 Kudos: 1159 Votes: 191 Registered: 13-May-2003 | It depends on the plant. If it's a rooted plant, it needs deeper gravel. If it's a java fern, it doesn't need gravel at all. Given that it's a small tank and you're probably growning a smaller plant, I think what you describe sounds just about right. |

bubbly Small Fry Posts: 13 Votes: 0 Registered: 02-Aug-2004 | Thank you both, I think I will stick with the gravel then, and put one of my smooth flat pebbles in too Is there any particular rule as to how deep the gravel is? Or is that your own choice (is it possible to have it too deep or too shallow?) I imagine the plant will want a bit to anchor it. Mine goes from about just under an inch to just over two inches at the back. Should I take some out? Thank you Bubbly xxxxxx |

trystianity Mega Fish Posts: 1028 Kudos: 926 Votes: 49 Registered: 20-Mar-2004 | Bettas love the nature's delica stuff and daphnia's always good. As far as gravel goes, bettas don't really seem to care all that much about substrate although I have noticed that mine prefer sleeping on something smooth. I like to put a few flat sones in for my boys and they seem to like it. Some people even go bare bottomed but I don't like to because I have seen my bettas sleep in their own poop gefore and it bugs me. Planted betta tanks are great. . . all I have at the moment is hornwort but they really like it. |

DoctorJ Big Fish Posts: 344 Kudos: 1159 Votes: 191 Registered: 13-May-2003 | I think the daphnia would be fine, but I've never tried it. I'm sure your betta would tell you if he didn't like it! When I've had food experiments go bad, I just make sure I have the gravel vac handy to suction out whatever's on the bottom of the tank. I don't think the substrate matters much. I've used relatively fine gravel and smooth pebbles and it doesn't matter. Depending on the kind of live plant you're using, it may prefer the finer gravel, though. |

bubbly Small Fry Posts: 13 Votes: 0 Registered: 02-Aug-2004 | Sorry, one more question gravel or not? I have some very fine gravel in there at the moment, which looks nice and can hold the plants down (when I get them)I don't mind vacuuming and cleaning gravel, so it's not a problem to me. But what is best for the Betta? Or the plants could be held down with some smooth pebbles that I have. P.s I'm thinking one real plant and one silk plant (which I will do the nylon stocking test on)is this ok? Thanks in advance |
