Betta girl community? | |
katieb Fish Addict Posts: 697 Votes: 69 Registered: 03-Jul-2004 | I have a 5 gal that i want to plant and restock. I am hoping to get sparkling gouramis, but failing that im thinking of putting a few female bettas together. I know they can be aggressive like the males, so im wondering if there is a way of introducing them that makes overaggression less likely. I was thinking something like this 1) 3 betta girls 2 cherry barbs 1 Bamboo shrimp or 2) 3 betta girls 1 Bamboo shrimp Last edited by katieb at 24-Jul-2005 19:35 I'll do graffiti, If you sing to me in French. |

They might fight aswell, but i don't think as much as the males. http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/s8xi5heh/my_photos http://www.geocities.com/s8xi5heh/classic_blue.html http://groups.yahoo.com/group/buzaqq/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |

You can lessen the chance by buying females that in a tank together already. Also realize that once you put them in the 5 gallon they are going to form their own little pecking order. There will be some dominance. Three would be the most I would put in a 5. Give them lots of little pots and hiding spaces to get away from any agression. ___________________________________________ If at first you DO succeed, try not to look astonished. |

poisonwaffle Mega Fish Posts: 1397 Kudos: 591 Registered: 11-Feb-2003 | Personally, I'd heavily plant it and have a little rockwork (slate works well )...be sure to have plenty of hiding places and plenty of food I had 3 female CT's in a 2.5g for a short while whilst their 10g was a breeding tank, and they ripped eachother to shreds...then again, one of them was psychotic, and it was a bare bottomed tank They were fine once they were back in the 10g. They're now in my 29g with 4 other female bettas (I had 8 total, but one died while I was in NY...I'm going to be replacing her in a few days )...there's a few territory disputes here and there, but for the most part, they get along decently You might want to try it and see how it goes...be sure to pick healthy females that don't show a lot of agression (kinda hard to find sometimes ). If, for some reason, one of them becomes dominant over the others and likes to pick fights, get her her own tank, and consider getting another for the 5g You might want to put more than 1 shrimp in there tho...maybe like 3-4...maybe a different species...I dunno Good luck...have fun |

Im also going to make sure that i have back up plans for any aggressive females. If i have to, I may just have one female and some cherry barbs. I also want to add more shrimp, though i think another bamboo may not be a good idea, as they get pretty big. Hopefully someone in my area has amanos or something similar. Explaining your focus of the tank -- and then ask if they could provide the females.... Many times, breeders have sibling females and/or house females in one tank... Since these females have been raised together, the aggression level is reduced... And an added plus is the fact that many breeders offer "specials" on the girls.... A "six pack" price, etc... Try emailing my friend, Paul at this address VADHART@aol.com (He used to have a website but is now reducing stock planning to retire from the breeding aspect)... or visit this website: coloradocrowntails.com (Sarah). I've gotten very lovely, healthy girls from both at excellent prices!!! But another thing to bear in mind is that the younger ALL the girls are, the more likely they'll accept one another..... or at least that's what I've experienced! My 55 gal female betta aquarium is beautiful in my opinion... and I hope you find as much enjoyment in yours! To thine own self be true... |

I've never had an issue introducing girls to my betta girl communities. I've got two running currently and tend to ... randomly pick up new girls. ... okay, yes, call me official betta girl rescuer! I tend to pick up the mangled or otherwise needy girls and bring them home. I get my girls from different stores, different situations, and haven't had issues introducing them. Maybe it's something in the water. In any case, I find that with patience and a bit of luck, you can successfully put together a betta girl community. ~Meow. Thus spoke the cat.~ |

She seems a little on the aggressive side too...maybe ill just give her and a couple cherry barbs the tank. I'll do graffiti, If you sing to me in French. |
