Hello! I have a 30 gallon hexagon shaped tank and I was wondering if I could put a betta in there? I was going to have angelfish but the local fish store said the water in my area is not what they like. Now I know bettas breath air and so I dont know if they would like to be in such a tall tank. Any suggestions? I have no fish in there at this time because I recently moved all of my fish into an 80 gallon tank and im looking for just a few fish to put in this one.
Thanks!

bettas for the most part, dont usually spend alot of time at the bottom, so dont worry about drowning.

So it should be alright then? Now my tank is pretty heavily planted and it has already been cycled because of the fish I had in there before. They were in there for about a year with no problems at all. Could I add some female bettas as well? What else would be good with one male betta? I am open to any ideas and suggestions.
Thank you!

You really don't want to put female bettas in with a male, but some people have multiple female bettas. Females don't always get along, however. You only want to have a female in a tank with a male if you plan to breed them - then take her out so the male does not kill her.
With a male betta, you can have cories, about six would work in your 30 gallon - they like to be in groups of the same species, and a school of small tetras - neons, cardinals, lemons, pristellas, or you could have harlies.

Did they tell you what exactly it is about your water that they wouldn't like? Angels and bettas have similar water requirements-temp, pH, etc. I would just be concerned about the betta having problems...maybe find out what the test results are for your water and plan stock from there?

for the most aprt, bettas aren't really to picky as to water conditions, as angels so i would probably not go with angels.

again, really like stated: never add females with males without breeding ideas, unless you really know what you are doing, as when you look at it, it really is worth the risk.

in a 30 depending on the betta, platys are good, as well as corys for the bottom, just with a tall tank you can't stock as mush as a reg tank.

Im not sure why my water isn't good for angels but she also told me she wouldnt go with angels because they are really sensitive.
Ok so no females with the male will work. I like corys too so maybe I will look into getting some of those.
Thanks!

zebra danios, glow light tetras, neons, and swordtails are some good tank mates for a male betta. i have had much luck with these combinations, and for bottom dwellers, koolie loaches and Corydoras work good. but certainly no angel fish, gouramis, guppies or anything with long flowing fins, the betta will certainly go after them.

just watch, because bettas have a weird attitude, some like tank mates of anykind, and others wont put up with anybody at all.

Fish tanks are an expensive addiction
