Betta is super nasty? | |
So_Very_Sneaky Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 3238 Kudos: 2272 Votes: 201 Registered: 10-Mar-2004 | So , I bought a betta, 2 actually. I had them in a 10g with a divider between. Fine. Day 3, red/white betta dies. Divider is removed, remaining purple/blue betta doing great! Frisky, happy, eatin lots, flares at his own reflection, but nothing else! A week or so later: Betta somehow got trapped in clay pot hole overnight, couldnt get out and died. Sad sad sad. Poor thing. I hope the BN and Hillstream were munching on it after it died, not while it was alive. How Horrid. I had to push the fish the rest of the way through, he could have never backed out. 3 days later: really miss havin a betta! Go out and buy new betta, almost totally deep blue. Beautiful healthy young fish. Only problem: He doesnt flare at his own reflection. Nope. He flares at the Hatchetfish and the BN plec and the Hillstream Loach. He hates the hatchetfish, tries to kill them. SO he is now in a plastic breeder trap on "time out". He can see the hatchets through the plastic and is still flaring and being a real nasty little dude. Solution? Could I risk putting him in my 90g? Would the sudden ! There are fish in here much bigger than me! shock scare him out of his aggression, or would he just attack them too? Would he attack guppies and platys? Should I take him back to the pet store? The hatchets when they get bigger will be going in my 90g tank I think (assuming they get big enough), or if not, in my 25g. They are still in quarantine and are really small, so the betta definetly could kill them. I dont know how long the hatchets will take to get big enough, could be a month or more, and the betta seems really depressed, when hes not busy trying to kill hatchetfish through the plastic wall. I am thinking taking him back. He is so gorgeous though. And before anyone suggests it, I wont put him in a small "bowl" of his own. This betta is used to warm water, hes been in my 80F tank for 3 days or so now, and came from a store where he was also kept in a tank of 78-80F. He's probibly going to keep being nasty and you probibly won't ever be able to trust him with anything else. I had one that was horribly nasty, when I had him in QT, he was with a very small RTBS also in QT and she ended up with no color in her tail and chunk of it missing. (she has since recovered and turned into a very beautiful shark). I also tried him with cories figuring that noone ever bothers them. I was wrong on that one, he killed 4 in one night. I actually caught him with one in his mouth shaking it! Steph ~ Mae West |

I decided to try him in the 90. Perhaps something about the hatchetfish just bugs him. So far so good, he was very shy and scared at first, but 6-7 hours later he seems to be coming out more and more, and he came and ate with the other fish. Perhaps with fish his "own size" he might just realize he cant be a bully I am hoping! Come Play Yahtzee With Me! http://games.atari.com Http://www.myleague.com/yahtgames |
