Riiiight... I can't even say that! Anyway, was cruising aquabid and saw this betta pair for sale... [link=http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?fwbettas&1115574640]http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?fwbettas&1115574640" style="COLOR: #000000[/link]

The IBC species maintenance page doesn't even have a description for them, though there is a couple pictures. [link=Pangkalanbun]http://ibc-smp.org/species/pangkalanbun.html" style="COLOR: #000000[/link]

Is pretty... wish I had the money! Anyone else ever heard of this betta? Looks very cool and has an interesting shape to it.

I shall have to just become uber rich, go to thailand myself and collect a couple dozen species of wild bettas... and then come back to share the fishies with my FP friends!

Oh, I WISH I could get them! I'd LOVE to get started on my dreamt of wild betta collection... I just do NOT have any money to spend. *sigh* So sad. If anyone else wants to go for them, be my guest... but I demand pics!

The reason here is no information is because they are undescribed. Notice how it says Betta sp. "Blah" instead of Betta blah?

Its not actually a species name, its a name of a main city in Indonesia, the place where these fish were discovered/found/captured etc.

If you think of it in human terms, instead of your name being Kitten Cat (lets just say that it is ) you would be Kitten sp. America (the sp. standing for species)

It doesn't necessarily mean that you aren't Kitten Cat, it just means that they aren't certain, because you don't look like the run of the mill kitten cat.

Is this making sense? I don't know if you know it all already, but I figured it might help explain why you can't find much info on it.

So what is for sale is a Betta species that was caught in/near pangkalanbun. The species in unknown, and does not match the scientific descriptions of any of the fish currently in the genus Betta. Therefore, while it is waiting to be described (added to the list of known betta species, and checked to be certain that it is not just a variant of a currently described species) it gets called Betta sp. pangkalanbun. Its like an "insert species here" note, just so the fish can be identified in the meantime.

http://www.geocities.com/kuchingensis/bettalist.html

I just googled that website to give you a bit more of an idea how many betta species there are out there that are as of yet undescribed. They all use that same style of interim naming

Hope that helps a bit

EDIT: Just had a thought. About the only other fish that I know of that is undescribed and has a wealth of info on it in the genus Betta is B. sp. "Mahachai". The info is rather confusing and conflicting, because everyone has their own ways of IDing the fish, and not all of the methods work. I am sweating on the authorities actually giving us a good description to work with!

Ooo... another betta list! *adds to favs*

Yeah, I knew it was undescribed and to a certain extent, knew what that entailed, but thank you for the info. I think it's all fascinating.

I still vote on the "get rich, get fish" scheme. And y'all are invited!
