Because bettas breathe from the surface, can they be affected from large amounts of Co2 in the water? This is probably a stupid question, but I was wondering if Co2 can harm the betta's body or cause any other kind of distress.

Well, thanks!

they do also breathe with their gills, in fact i think this appears more preferable to them. they will be just as affected by large amounts of CO2 as other fish and can/will suffocate if large amounts are put in. Also, the pH swing will affect their slime coat and possibly send them into shock.

take the same care as you wiuld with a tank full of tropicals.
