I use a generic chlorine remover, or Ammolock2.

I avoid stresscoat as i have heard ikky stories about it with bettas.

I use the same I use for my other tanks, that being Start Right by Jungle Labs. My mom insists on using the tiny bottle of betta water conditioner (I forget what it's called, exactly). I can't fathom spending twice as much (or more) on a product that does the same thing and what I use, though.

Frankly, I simply use Wardley's Chlor Out... Seems to work just as well as the other products I've used -- but certainly is a lot cheaper!!! (I buy it at Wal Mart for about $2.00)
Now granted, I use more than the 5 drops per every gallon as noted in the directions.... When doing my weekly vac/water changes I use an entire bottle for about 55 gals of water...
Personally, I've never had much luck with the "stress coat" conditioners.... I always manage to get quite a "film" over everything - which eventually makes the water look cloudy --- but let's be honest! Since I don't have the patience to measure by drops per gallon - I'm probably over conditioning!!!! (Oh! If ONLY I'd been blessed with PATIENCE!!!!!

Thanks for replies, everyone. I have only ever used StressCoat, but I just read some bad things about long term use of products with aloe. All my other fish have been fine, but I have not had luck with bettas. So I was thinking of trying a different brand for the next betta I get. Hopefully that solves my betta deaths.

I want to try something without a lot of extra stuff. Meaning, all I want the conditioner to do is remove metals, break the chloramine bond, and remove chlorine. From the searching that I have done, Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Tap Water Conditioner seems like the one I'll try. Does anyone use this product, with or even without a betta?

I use Prime Water Conditioner. I have well water, but I use the conditioner anyway because it also removes harmful heavy metals always found in wells, and detoxifies Nitrite and Nitrate, and I know for a fact that both of these are present in my well water.

I like Prime -- a little bit goes a long way.
