Recently I have paired two of my best Betta together to breed. I was all set to watch and observe, but an emergency came up and I had to leave the house for a few hours. By the time I returned, the male was ignoring the female instead of the courting from earlier and he remained underneath the bubblenest. I wasn't sure if they did spawn or not but to be on the safer side, I removed the female and placed her in the hospital tank to heal (in clear veiw of the male, although it was unintentional). The next morning I noticed that she had dropped a large amount of eggs (10+) but the male still remains underneath the bubblenest, vigorously adding and re-arranging bubbles. So I'm confused, did they- or did they not spawn?

wait 48 hours, if you get tails, they did Or you can cheat and tap the thing they nested under, unless the male is a great nester, eggs will generally tumble out.

10+ eggs isn't that many, she probably had close on 200. She may have eaten some, or there may be some in the nest already, or there may still be some in her

The thing with breeding is that you have to be really patient. You have to expect that there will be some damage, and you have to sit back and really stop yourself from stepping in to early. They don't court constantly, it tends to be on and off. Sometimes the male will just ignore the girl, other times she'll go to shoo him away, or he'll shoo her away. She'll tend to get some torn fins, and chances are he will too. It is SO tempting to separate them as soon as it gets a bit rough, but unfortunately you tend to need to stick it out.

Don't worry so much about them being within sight of each other, the only time that it is a major problem is if you are trying to build suspense between siblings/tankmates before mating.

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett
