I'm sitting here at work, just about to leave for the day when I look up at one of my bettas. She's on a shelf right over my desk, so I'm looking straight up into the biggest bubble nests I've ever seen. No kidding.

She's in a two gallon kritter keeper and the bubble nest covers probably 85% of the surface. To give you an idea of the size, the tank has surface area measuring approximately 11" x 6". There's very little place for her to actually get to the surface to breathe.

Jezebel is weird. She hasn't decided if she's female or male (bought her as female, but still haven't quite figured her out). She's aggressive and was dubbed Jezebel the Betrayer after I rescued her tattered self from my LFS, only to have her rip apart MY betta girls after I healed her up.

Anyway, just thought I'd share the story of her huge nest... never seen one near this size. Go figure... she's the only betta I have that doesn't have a heater, too. Just haven't gotten one for her yet. I was feeling bad because it's been a bit cooler than normal around here lately, but I guess she's just fine with that!

One of my boys does the same thing. One day he covered the entire surface of his tank (wasn't quite as big a the 2 gal kritter keeper) with a nest and had to wreck about half of it to come up for air/food. Then he rebuilt it, only to have to wreck it again. He did this for about three days before he got sick of it and concentrated on making a thicker nest. Now he makes nests that are over an inch thick, but relatively small.

Yay for kittens betta! I love when they build bubble nests, makes me feel like a proud Mommy. How thick is the one he/she built?

The better part of the nest is perhaps three bubbles high or 1/8". There's some portions that are over half a dozen bubbles high, more than 1/4".

It's amusing, because Equity, my other work betta (definitely male!) sits on the other side of the shelf. They can't see each other due to the stuff between them, but I swear they were having a contest on bubble nest building. Before Jezebel's huge nest, Equity's was the biggest one I'd ever seen. His is thicker (about as thick as Jez's at the thickest point), but covers much less space.

Speaking of bubble nests... now I have to try and FEED Jez, which should prove difficult, as the nest completely takes up the middle of the tank, where the food would fall. *rolls eyes*
