Callatya those girls are pretty. I love Bettas, I think they are one of the personable and colorful fish you can buy. I also resent that female Bettas are not much to look at, I mean look at those pics!

I'll ask around the breeders and see who is where

I know there are 4 or 5 in melbourne,so one is bound to be able to help you

Breeder nets are odd contraptions, about $6.
They are a box skeleton with a fabric net that sort of ties up around it, letting all the water circulate far better than the box/barracks setups

And some of my girls are pretty!

And if finding a breeder in your area fails, almost all will post

Sorry... but I have to take exception with "females aren't much to look at"......
I have a dedicated tank of all female Bettas - and it's a VERY stunning tank..... My girls are blue, red, yellow, rosy pink, white, etc.... Perfect compliments to their male counterparts.... Now if you're talking about the length of their finnage --- Yes, I'd agree that males make a larger presentation --- But even with their shorter fins, females are QUITE BEAUTIFUL!!!! And a little easier to keep - For although you have to monitor carefully to make sure you don't have a rogue, nasty female, for the most part they're able to co-exist peacefully.... With no fighting, no fin damage.... especially once "pecking order" is established....
Males are a bit more tricky.... While it is possible to find a couple of males that can live in the same tank with one another, it is somewhat a rarity... NEVER recommended... And often, males must be separate from one another.....
I know that MANY years ago, about the only females you could find were the drab brown --- kind of like guppy females... But now both - through breeding - have developed into colorful beauties in their own right! And the personalities you find! Some timid, some agressive, etc.... No, I must disagree with "not much to look at"... If you truly believe that, you should see my all girl tank!

To thine own self be true...

female bettas have smaller fins which i would suppose makes it easier for them to swim (but they arent much to look at). and a breeder net is net cube that can be used for various things but is sold for keeping fry safe from other fish that might eat them without having to set up a whole new tank to keep them safe.

im in melbourne...the eastern suburbs. know of any places?

also, what do you mean by a breeder net? Is that one of those things you see several males in when they're in the same tank? Those divided perspex boxes, stuck to the front of the tank?

your problem is going to be that the fish, coming from that tiny container into a 50, the fish will spend quite a few days flipped out.

get a breeder net and let it get used to the idea in that first.

i'd get a female or so, or a short-tail, just so you dont have to worry so much about their ability to swim in such a large space.

Where abouts are you? we might be able to give you a good shop name or local breeder who could help you get a healthy one.

and the fins do regenerate, but often they are so stressed they are always relapsing.
