Dropsy | |
Ferox Enthusiast Posts: 219 Kudos: 187 Votes: 28 Registered: 19-Dec-2003 | Does anyone have any ideas about how to treat dropsy? One of my boys has just started to pinecone this morning. He's in a tank by himself btw. <Vet in Training> Blog under development: http://www.nearlydrferox.blogging4life.com/ |

By the time bloating and pine-coning becomes apparent it's already too late to act. I'm not even sure what causes Dropsy except to say it may be kidney failure, the reason for the internal fluid buildup. The antibiotic "Gentamycin" has been suggested as a possible aid but only, if possible, in the early stages before pine-coning. The malady may be contageous but I have no proof that it actually is. You can try the antibiotic but my guess is the fish will not survive for long. --garyroland. |

Fish are dropping like flies around Sydney. Double your dechlorinator and consider using bottled water for bettas The ABA are trying to get a straight answer out of Sydney water, but they aren't very forthcoming. About the only time i had success with dropsy, it was with medicated food, but even then it was only temporary. I got to spend about 4 more months with him, but that was it. |

Though the strange thing is that the other fishes in the same tank are unaffected. Last edited by friedrice at 22-Nov-2004 23:32 |

He's mostly pineconing around his head, most noticably under his chin. I don't know how old he is but i've had him for about 8 months, and he had full finnage then. thanks for the advice. I'll have to see if i can find the medicine. <Vet in Training> Blog under development: http://www.nearlydrferox.blogging4life.com/ |

Its not a 'blame it on the water' sort of thing, but its becoming a common thing around here, sudden deaths and illnesses after WCs where routine hasn't changed. Ferox, if its just around the head, treatment might well work. get those meds quick! |

I'm not sure if i should feed him or not, incase there was internal damage caused by him chomping on his food while it was still crispy. <Vet in Training> Blog under development: http://www.nearlydrferox.blogging4life.com/ |
