My retired male betta is residing in a 6 gallon tank. When he was in my 10 gallon he had the company of a few zebra danios when the tank was cycling. He seemed to love the company, and whenever he is the tank with other fish he always seems happier. So what other fish could i add to keep him company?

Cherry barbs, white cloud mountain minnows, ottos, and dwarf cories are all suitable companions. I wouldn't go with any schooling fish, because a tank that small isn't going to provide the room for a sizeable group.

I was not thinking a schooling fish, that would be cruel I dont want a ADF, they kinda are a little eerie looking to me. I wanted something with more color. Maybe cherry barbs...any other ideas? Would dwarf platies work? Or guppies?

Not guppies, their flowing tails would put them at risk of being mistaken for another male betta and being attacked.

I'd go with cherry barbs, which have nice color, are peaceful, and do well in pairs.

Another option would be male Endler's. I don't think you'd have the problems guppies would pose since they don't have the long flowing fins.

I am thinking along the lines of a pair of cherry barbs...or my mom as a science unit for her first grade class studies guppies and they use basically feeder guppies, so they do not have long flowing tails. could some of those maybe work?

I have mine in with a pair of cherry barbs and they pretty much leave each other alone. Also, as long as you don't get any female feeders, they should work too.

My betta's tail is getting a little ripped up, i am not sure how or why. I think it is due to the filter intake. What kind of sponge should i get to put around the intake?

depends on ur betta, but the fishes that he got along with at first should be ok with him again.
