Ok , I have some female bettas in quarantine (in 2 cup/cups)..and one of them had what looks like a bubble nest in her cup when I went to feed her tonight. She has an egg spot...
so I'm sure she's female. Can they blow these by accident?

Actually, male bettas can get egg spots. They just like to make it really hard for us to sex them.

I'm pretty sure a female wouldn't blow a bubble nest, because of its breeding implications....

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.

My two cents....I have not witnessed it first hand but i have read about the rare female that will assume the job of building a bubble nest if no male is in sight. She just doesn't realize that she needs him. I have also heard of the even rarer egg eating female and yet even rarer egg eating male....good luck....P.S.happy birthday to my little betta fry.

I've had plenty of females who help with the nest. That's always very cool. And sadly (they're not as rare as you might think ) have had both male and female (more often the male it seems) who snack on the eggs or the fry. I've seen photos of gals who do the nest thing, but never had one who did it. Man, I think that would just freak me right out.

I had a female that blew bubble nests. (Yes she was a female - long finned and spewed eggs out every two weeks )

It is possible, and I have pictures on my other hardrive (dad keeps switching them )

She's in her quarantine cup next to other quaranting cups of girls..so she must think they are male.
