Hmm... I've heard of females helping to build the nest in a breeding situation, but not just randomly. Are you sure it's a female and not a short-tailed male? Honestly, I've been through that situation where a betta was sold as a female but wound up being very definitely male.

To differentiate, take a look at the shape of the body from the side. Females tend to be curvier, and have more ounced bellies. If you look between the two pelvic fins (under the belly) see if you can find a small white spot/bump. It's easier to see in darker girls, obviously, but should be discernible in the lighter ones too.

It isn't unheard of for a female to build a nest, and sometimes even release her eggs and put them in, but it is more likely that it is a misidentified male like Kitten said.

Is it just a few bubbles or a full size nest?

I just put a thread up with a whole bunch of pictures, see if that helps

If not, can you get a photo? We should be able to tell from a pic

Odds on its a male, I thought this was a female- it turned out not to be, lol, proven unequivocably by fighting like hell with an introduced male, and about 2 weeks later building a bubblenest under some xmas moss, and wrapping round a known female.

The shorties are back, which lets face it, is a good thing. Sexing bettas is back to being tricky again !

just download the pictures to a site like photobucket, then copy the URL link into the post that they give you, select it, then click the link button, and we'll be able to see the pics when the post is completed.

stand back from a tank, point the camera at a 45* angle from the glass, and try that

We don't need to to be crystal clear, we just need to see its shape
