Flaring: Male vs Female? | |
kitten Fish Guru Meow? Posts: 2266 Kudos: 2194 Votes: 19 Registered: 18-Nov-2003 | Out of curiousity, is there a difference between flaring in male and female bettas? I *think* - and I could be mistaken - that I saw mentioned somewhere that while males have that extra "fringe" to flare out, females do not. It just occured to me that I don't believe I've ever seen that extra fringe when my females flare, just the males. Seems to me that if this is true, it would be an additional way to differentiate between females and short-finned males. This question brought to you by the newest female addition to my betta brigade... who just showed me the tiniest little flare I ever did see... and had no gill fringe to show for all her bravado. ~Meow. I guess this would solve my debate over one of my fish... bought "her" as female, THOUGHT I saw the oviposter at one point, but haven't since. And it SHOULD be dang easy to find, considering "she" is dark blue/purple. I've never thought about the fins being farther apart... will have to go take a peek. I'm just curious about the "fringe" because Jezebel/beau (the one with the identity crisis ) definitely has a fringe (albeit a small one) and none of my other females seem to. ~Meow.
