I saw this cute adorable betta girl at the LFS, and she looked egg-bound? If I get her, how do I help her? Thanks!!

What do you mean by help her? Is there something wrong with her? If your concern is that's she's eggbound, that won't bother her. If you don't breed her she will eventually just release her eggs and ofcourse if no male is present to fertilize them, nothing will come of it. HTH

Oh, ok.. I thought I had to do something in order for her to release her eggs...I've heard of problems of females not releasing their eggs and dying. So, I just thought that there was something extra I had to do...

ok, well thanks a lot!!!

Well I can only speak from my own experience. All of the girls i've ever owned, have released the eggs on their own, and have never been harmed in doing so. I even had one female build her own bubble nest and deposit the eggs, then guard the nest as if something would happen. Poor thing sitting there waiting like that, it broke my heart I'm sure if anyone knows or has had and experience with a female Betta being injured by this, they will reply also. Good Luck, and don't forget to post pics of your new Betta girl when you get her.

Ok. THat's good to know... I went and got her, and her friend ::teehee::

I tried putting them together in a ten gallon. But, things didn't go so well.. So, i put the more agressive one with a cherry barb in a five gallon and left the other girl in the ten...

So, i'll be creating a new thread entited, "What can I put with a female betta?"

stay tuned...lol. just kidding.

P.S. thanks for the help..

from what i know, females can't die like that. i wouldn't get her if u don't have room, or plan on breeding bettas.

Females can die from eggbinding, it just depends on why they are bound and if they are able to resorb the eggs in time before they burst.
If it is due to a genetic deformity, they can just bloat right up and then go pop not a fun sight!

I hope you enjoy your girlies they are great fun!

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett

Don't you just love betta girls? I think they're the best.

If you find she doesn't drop her eggs or reabsorb them, you may want to try breeding her. It's rare for them to die from being eggbound, but it is possible.

One warning... they're PIGS. They have a tendency to be fat, even more so than their male counterparts. I have to sneak food to my cories otherwise they'll eat it all. I'm settling into feeding every other day simply because they tend to fat so easily. I've tried feeding smaller portions, but then the black neons don't get food... *sigh* Silly girls... I love them to death, though!

Give them a while... my girls are absolute camera hogs. It doesn't matter WHO I'm trying to photograph, there's always at LEAST one shot with a betta girl in front of the intended subject.

Here's Calliope, on of the girls in my betta girl community tank, butting in while I was trying to get a picture of the newest addition to my motley cory gang.

My girl I put in the ten gallon, her name is Carmen now... She was swimming in the current from the filter and she was getting faster and faster until she finally got close enough and then she jumped in the filter.... I started freaking out and immdiately went for the power strip her filter is plugged in to, to turn it off. On my way there I heard a "plop" in the water and she was back in the tank without a scratch on her... Now, the filter output flow control is turned up so my little speed swimmer won't be able to take anymore adventures.

I just recently lost a very expensive halfmoon import female to eggbinding. She did not drop her own eggs, she did not absorb them... her guts came out before I could set her up with her male to help her get rid of them. Poor thing! She was perfection... and absolutely huge... gorgeous girl! *sighs* Sometimes we lose our favorites though!
