I bought a female with gorgeous coloring the other day at the LFS. The person there told me she is a female but her coloring is so beatiful i am not 100% sure. But she definitley has the ovipositor, the little white dot behind her anal fins. I read that it is a sure sign of a female. Also she is really plump so it seems like she is filled with eggs. But on the other hand there are a few bubbles on the top of her water so i don't know what those could be from. Thanx for all your help in advance!

just because the betta builds a nest doesn't mean that it is a male. many females also build nest. also the white dot under the fish isn't always 100% right. many males have a white dot under them also. because the betta is fat doesn't mean that they are eggs. many times bettas get really fat. the way that i use that is usually right but often hard for beginners is looking at the head. on the male betta mainly short tail males the face is more bolder as the females head is more curved. also when looking straight at the fish males have a extra flap of skin by the gills that hangs down when the fish ISN'T flaring.

hey everyone, im having the same problem with one of my bettas too, i have a short tail that looks kinda like a male b/c of its big/wide tail but at the same time it might be a female bc it has a plumb body that is white. i have a pic but it isnt really good so im gonna go take so more pics, after i get the pics on to the comp how am i gonna show them.

i also would like to mention that i have another female betta, it dont look like anything like the betta that i talked about above. this one i think is a betta imbellis and the one above is a betta splendens.

You should USUALLY be able to tell by the shape of the bodies.

What colour are these fish?

if they are pale/white, there is a good way to tell... look for the eggs!

you can see sort of a triangle of a lighter colour in the body (see the circled part) and in really light fish you can actually see individual eggs when they get really full.

About the only other thing you can use is the length of the ventrals.

See what you can do about some piccies

yeah the tail on the betta pic looks just like the tail on my short tail female. her stomache is really big and there is some sort of white thingy coming out of the anus.

well, plakats are less fussed with, so the likelyhood of you having a plakat with a white spot is slim. At a guess, i would think you had a female.
