I was just curious of the physiology of the filaments on gouramis. Is there a specific purpose??

Thanks for any replies.

Yep there sure is a purpose.
The filaments act as visual detection in waters
swamped with vegetation and muck.
They also have taste sensors in them so that the
gourami can taste its way around the world.
In the wild they come from waters that may have almost
zero visibility, so its an adaptation to that.

Cool, I suspected they may be used at least partially for taste or smell.

My Opaline put her feelers on the glass when I touch the tank. I think she's trying to see what I feel like. She's a sweet fish. She also uses them them to check out the other fish.

Mine seem to use them to identify each other and food. My large male wil touch the female with them and act friendly, but if he touches the other male with them he will run him off. They also go through the java moss and other plants feeling around for food.
