I'm not sure what happening..... I seem to have no control over the problems.... First Vette became ill and perished... Now Blue seems to be ailing! His symptoms are making fast, quick circles at the surface sporadically - while the rest of the time, he just kind of "hangs" at the surface vertically - not horizontally!!! SOMETHING HAS TO BE WRONG --- BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS!!!!!

Blue has been treated with Maracyn-2 because of a recent case of pop eye.... But he's always readily eaten - and has lost no color.... Just this very strange behavior -- and it only started yesterday!!!!! Whatever is going on with him appears to be rapidly taking a toll...

Vette, as you know had different symptoms -- color had faded, wouldn't eat, DIDN'T have pop eye, and was generally lifeless.....

But although their symptoms aren't the same - I can't believe 2 of my fish would become ill at almost the same time and NOT be somehow connected!!!!

They didn't share the same tank at any time.... and their "tank mates" continue to thrive... The food menu has not changed....

I'm at a loss to figure this out ---- CAN ANYBODY HELP ME????

Is it possible that the new substrate is leeching something into the tanks?

I don't believe so.... If that were happening, wouldn't the "tank mate" be suffering from the same symptoms? And as it stands right now, both Vette's and Blue's tank mates are actively healthy!

Just wanted to let you know.... Blue passed away early this morning....

In trying to save him, I emailed my friend Paul @ BiloxiBettas.com ..... Although he can't say for sure, Paul feels Blue might have been suffering from a secondary infection of some sort to pop eye --- which he'd contracted previously and was being treated for...

He based this particular opinion primarily on the fact that Blue's tank mate and all other Bettas in my charge are not showing ANY signs of distress... along with the fact that he's familiar with my habits in fish keeping -- as I've emailed him often with questions...

Paul did enlighten me with one fact regarding Blue's symptoms - which I'd like to pass along... Most times when a fish is "hanging" close to the surface for long periods of time it's a sign of parasites... Caught early enough, a fish can be saved by treatment with Quick Cure or Copper Safe... I realize that this tidbit of information might be old news to a lot of you --- but there are probably some people who, like me, could stand to have this information.....

You see, I'd noticed Blue's strange behavior of "hanging" vertically close to the water surface the night before... but because he had no outward, visual physical signs of anything being wrong and because he at that time was still eating heartily, I kind of dismissed it --- Knew it was out of the ordinary, but never dreamed it could be life threatening! My ignorance cost me a very dear pet - and I wouldn't want that to happen to anyone else due to lack of information.....
