Hardy Gourami? Guppies? | |
hamstamasta Fingerling Posts: 27 Kudos: 17 Votes: 0 Registered: 19-Feb-2005 | I'm thinking about adding a gourami to my 20 gal to eat some of my extra guppy fry... any ideas on a hardy one that might do well in my tank? Besides the guppy fry and the adult guppies, there's also a school of neon tetras. I was thinking honey gourami maybe, but I don't want a super-sensitive or aggresive fish. |

My danios would snatch up the guppies within the first few days of birth, and whatever escaped them during those days were generally safe. That's how I wound up with two dozen guppies instead of two hundred! I started out with a trio (2f/1m) and thanks to my danios (The Terrible Trio), I wasn't completely overwhelmed by guppies! ~Meow. Thus spoke the cat.~ |

I have them with guppies at the moment, and they used to be with neons, and they caused no problems. I've seen them hunt down fry pretty good, and in my experience they're very hardy. |

However, a dwarf gourami is a bit hardier. If you put in any bigger gourami, like a blue or a kissing, they might eat the adult gouppies or the tetras, or at least kick them around a bit. Also, a dwarf is a bit bigger than a honey. A honey might not be agressive enough to eat the fry, but a dwarf probably would. |

Also, I've had Blue/3 Spot/Opaline/Lavender Gouramies in with Guppies and the never ate the fry. African Butterfly Fish would be cool..and would definitely take care of MOST of the fry..although they might occasionally injure an adult guppy enough to kill it (won't fit in their mouth but I've lost some males to ABF before). My Dwarf Gouramies wouldn't eat they fry ,either..but maybe mine were just odd? |
