Males are generally larger than females, although if you're looking at fish of various ages that doesn't help much. Males are also more brightly colored and their fins are longer.

Like bettas males will fight so only one per tank. There are a lot of fs and sites that say they can be kept like bettas in small, unfiltered tanks but I don't agree with that.

There is a lot of different information on keeping a M and F together. A large tank is required and lots of plants are a plus. Many people say it's actually better to have 2 or more F in case of an agressive M. I have a M/F pair and have been very lucky.

What size tank are you thinking of and what other fish are in it?

My female was acclimating here but this pic gives an idea of the basic differences:

30gl. 6 neons 1 dwarf gouramie 1 female betta(both not aggresive) 2 cherry barbs and maybe some more larger tetras

That's a good size tank but I'm not sure about the gourami and betta. I wouldn't worry about agression from them, but towards them from the paradisefish.

Mind are in a community tank with platies, guppies, rams, an angel and bottom feeders.
