Just a useless question for you all :

If bettas need to get to the surface to breathe, then when they're sleeping how do they breathe?!?!

Good question.

From my experience, Bettas(probably all fish) just take short naps. When they need air, they go get it. I see my Betta resting in the plants quite often, but never for more than a few minutes at a time.

My guess is that they slow down their metabolism so they don't have to come up for air as often.

its not like their gills don't work, they can stay underwater

they just have the 'easy' option of surface breathing.

A lot of mine sleep on the bottom, some in amongst the rocks, some balancing on their fins.

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett

How do bettas sleep? Any way they want to. Seen Gofish sleep inside his pot...most of the others drape themselves over the java moss.

btw..sorry to hear about Twitch.

I've never managed to catch mine asleep yet! When I wake up early in the morning it's barely light enought to see and I can only just make out a dark shape doing 'laps' in his tank before breakfast!

It's a total shame that my betta has a better workout routine than I do..lol. What is up with that anyways? They seem to tire themselves out for rest of the day, because they do more moving around when I get up than the they do for rest of the day. Maybe they're just happy to see I'm not dead...LOL.

I've caught mine sleeping. They usual prop themselves on a plant near the surface. It's adorable.
