They can live much longer than three years, however. I personally have had them live up to five and a half.

My oldest will be 6 in October but he is a very cranky old fish. I have several that are between 2 - 4 years.

However, the problem with chain store/pet store bettas, is that you don't know how old they are when you purchase them, and what kind of treatment/stress they have experienced before you purchased it. That may explain the difference in life spans.

yep pet store bettas are often old, so maybe at most a year or two after u get them. there have been reports of bettas living up to 9 years. but the common age is 3 - 5.

Yup. The average age for bettas seems to be three or four years, though the occasional specimen lives longer. These fish have short lifespans, and do not typically live for as long as even the lowly neon tetra does!

And, as mentioned above, bettas are often about a year old by the time they hit stores. The reason for this is purely economical. Breeders (or distributors, or whoever) let the bettas age before selling/shipping them so that their fins have had time to grow out. This makes them (especially the males) look more attractive to the potential buyer, ensuring that more bettas are sold.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

if u wanted to preform an exeriment, try breeding some bettas, and raise the fry, for as long as possible, and see how long bettas can live.
