Torc Small Fry Posts: 7 Kudos: 4 Votes: 0 Registered: 18-May-2005 | Also, In response to the Barbs and Gourmi in the same tank. There were 4 of them with the blue gourami. They were getting along very well. The gourami defneded his territorry well. there was some mild chasing going on but noting bad. After a few weeks, noone in the tank had nipped fins or any damage. As I stated in my response prior to this, they are in a 30 Long now. I'll get some new pics tomorrow for you to see. |

Torc Small Fry Posts: 7 Kudos: 4 Votes: 0 Registered: 18-May-2005 | The tank has been upgraded to a 30 Long. I have 2 blue gouramis in there now. I "hope" i have a male and female. The dorsal fins do look different. The one I suspect is a male tends to keep his bristled back and it appears to be pointier. The females dorsal fin is more rounded and tends to be more upright, but not being completely extended in a threatening manner. I think they're happy in other words. The one I suspect is male also happens to be a lot smaller than the one I suspect is a female. I'll try and snap some pics of each. Maybe you can help me determine what sex they are. Thanks again -Torc |

I think you folks should just agree to disagree for the time being, until someone can be proven right or wrong. What I find ironic is that the thread's author has not returned to view their post in the past week. |

He's also seen foot long African Clawed Frogs. This is awfully funny (not) I have seen a 10 inch long ACF- not a foot long one, I said in that post that the amphibian society of canada states that ACF which are considered an invasive pest species, are considered so because in the wild they can grow as large as 10-14 inches, and eat everything, including other frogs and toads (hence why they shouldnt be kept with fish or in a 10g tank). Thats where I got my info on those guys. I dont exaggerate on fish. Sheesh -you sound like the LFS store guy who told me I was exaggerating that clown loaches reach 14 inches - when he says only 4-5. Also- I am not a HE, I am a woman I will take my cam and a ruler to the LFS from now on when I go. Perhaps here in BC we just grow larger fish - must be the lack of pollution and chemicals in the water ]:| Come Play Yahtzee With Me! http://games.atari.com Http://www.myleague.com/yahtgames |

He's also seen foot long African Clawed Frogs. I say female opaline (varation of blue) gourami. Regardless of gender, the tank is possibly too small. Although a 20 could possibly suffice, a 10 (which looks like yourse is) is too small for a 5" - 6" fish. For the record, the only gouramis that can get 9" or larger are snakeskin, kissing, and giant (and there is a giant gourami look-a-like which I do not know by name). Platinum (moon light/beam) gouramis are up there, but usually stay in the 6" range, although bigger than that is not uncommon. Pearls are not usually bigger than 6". Blues are around the same size. So_Very_Sneaky Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 3238 Kudos: 2272 Votes: 201 Registered: 10-Mar-2004 | Yes, I am sorry to say Blue Gouramis do get that large. I have seen many many specimens well over the 7 inch mark. 6 inches is about the minimum size for an adult blue/gold/opaline gourami. Heres some links on info: [link=http://animal-world.com/encyclo/fresh/anabantoids/bluegourami.php]http://animal-world.com/encyclo/fresh/anabantoids/bluegourami.php" style="COLOR: #00FF00[/link] [link=http://petplace.netscape.com/Articles/artShow.asp?artID=1173]http://petplace.netscape.com/Articles/artShow.asp?artID=1173" style="COLOR: #00FF00[/link] I actually almost bought a gold one about a year ago, She was 7.5 inches, 5 years old, and cost 29.95- unfortunately she was already purchased at the time. I used to have a pic of a nice large male - I seem to have lost it- it was a great pic cuz it showed his size in relation to both full grown tiger barbs and nearly full grown Bala Sharks. So_Very_Sneaky Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 3238 Kudos: 2272 Votes: 201 Registered: 10-Mar-2004 | Bah, the gourami isn't so bad off I dont know about anyone else, or you- but a 7-8 inch fish DOES NOT belong in a 10 or 20g tank. It also looks like there is silver dollars as well as Tiger Barbs in there. Not compatible in a small tank such as this, and the silver dollars will get to be about 8 inches in diamter, and all these fish need at least a 55g tank to co-exist happily. Sorry guy- but its the truth. Come Play Yahtzee With Me! http://games.atari.com Http://www.myleague.com/yahtgames |

Sandy02 Enthusiast Posts: 174 Kudos: 123 Votes: 34 Registered: 11-Jan-2004 | Bah, the gourami isn't so bad off - until you look at the pictures with tiger barbs That is an absolute no. You cannot have a small school of barbs in with a gourami in that small of a tank. I mean, I have troubles with my school of barbs and one of my gouramis in a 55 gal... |

It looks like a 10-20g to me, either of which is way way way way too small for a gold/blue/opaline gourami. Come Play Yahtzee With Me! http://games.atari.com Http://www.myleague.com/yahtgames |
