I got Betta coccina! | |
trystianity Mega Fish Posts: 1028 Kudos: 926 Votes: 49 Registered: 20-Mar-2004 | Well the LFS was sold out of B. smaragdina AND the killies I wanted...some jerks made it in there faster than I did... I did get a bit of a surprise when I was in there...a small tank of Betta coccina! It was a bit of an impulse buy but I have done a lot of research on these cuties (especially when I wrote the profile on them ) and I decided I could give them the perfect home. The LFS owner said they just got off a plane from Indonesia on Wednesday, they are a very rare find around here but I managed to get a trio of them for just $10! They are adjusting well in my 10 gallon planted tank, which is softened and has the pH lowered to 6.5 with the use of peat and CO2. I have heard they are picky eaters but they have already accepted previously frozen bloodworm and even took a nibble at some crushed and softened spirulina pellet. I am already in LOVE with them, they are so cute and very different from Betta splendens. They are very skittish and fairly stressed (jet lagged maybe?) but the stress is understandable after being plucked from the wild and shipped around the world. They are hiding in the plants mostly and are very very small, so the pics I managed to get of them are pretty bad but I should have more coming soon. I know they're one of the harder bettas to breed but I'm hoping to spawn them. As I said they are very small and stressed out, but already I'm very impressed with their colour. They are a deep wine red with beautiful blue eyes. The females are horizontally striped right now (stress) and the male that I have has a beautiful blue spot on his sides. I couldn't get a good picture of him though, he has decided that his "spot" is begind a large aponogeton plant I have in the tank. I have also given the LFS word that I'm looking for Betta smaragdina next time they get a shipment, and I'm hoping to get them (and the killifish I wanted) in about a month. Anyway, here are the pics I managed to get: [hr width='40%'] (no she isn't dead, although I know it looks like it in this pic ) [hr width='40%'] [hr width='40%'] (the roundish bubble thing is a glass bubble that keeps my glass fish floating ) [hr width='40%'] YAY |

Just because I get up earlier than you so I can drive 800 miles to your LFS to buy the exact fish you wanted just to make your life miserable doesn't make me a jerk! Jokes aside, they are very nice looking fish, tryst. You planning on breeding them? Joe Potato |

I'm also going to culture some BBS since the B. coccina I have now are small enough that they should eat them. I am looking at getting a small government grant for disabled entrepreneurs to cover costs of my breeding projects for the summer. I would like to breed some killifish, show guppies, B. coccina and smaragdina for sure along with anything else I manage to get my hands on of course. Orders anyone? |
