I need help with my breeding pair of Bettas! | |
Pixieboy5000 Banned Posts: 14 Votes: 0 Registered: 29-May-2004 | I'm having some trouble with my breeding. I have decided to breed my male Betta "Gill" with one of my females. I have 3 females (They are ALL conditioned), and 2 of them (Violet and Sapphire) have become fat and have vertical lines on them. I put them in a breeding trap in the tank (I didn't use the breeding trap for the actual breeding. I'm not THAT thick) for Gill to see the 3 females. He blew his bubble nest and he started flaring at the females. That's when Violet and Sapphire started flaring back, became fatter and got vertical lines on their sides. I read in a book called "The Aquarium Owner's Manual: By Gina Sandford" to put in two females to reduce aggression. I did that and Gill started to chase Violet. Unfortunately that broke the bubble nest. Violet then hid in the plants. Gill then noticed Sapphire. She was not as scared as Violet but she was still chased around. Now Violet and Sapphire are hiding in the plants, while Gill is in mourning because he couldn't score , so what do I do now? I know they are ready to breed, but what is going on? Does it take a long time for them to breed or what? I'm very confused. . [span class="edited"][Edited by Callatya 2004-08-15 01:38][/span] |

I would suggest you remove everyone and re-condition for a few days and then try again. http://www.bettysplendens.com/articles/page.asp?articleid=80 http://www.bettasrus.com/bcorner/index.htm http://www.ontariobetta.envy.nu/breeding.htm Then if you still have questions AFTER reading we will all be happy to help ashley |

I would separate them again by putting the female in a vase or something to separate her so that they get "conditioned again". The posts above by Ontariobetta are quite informative. The actually process could take several attempts depending on the fishies. I have had my own trials and tribulations myself so don't feel bad. Betta's aren't the easiest breed in the world to "breed" so I would make sure that you do as much research as possible before your second attempt but goodluck! |

If you have a hard time getting them to do the deed, you can (keeper her in the jar) put the other female next to the tank. Kind of make competition for the free female. |

Also I have come to find out Bettas having very strong personality's. I have 6 males and 3 females, i've noticed some of the males are simply just to rough for the females. It's almost like they don't know how to act..so they spaz out..kind of like when you were in 2nd grade and you'd punch the girl you like in the arm..CUZ YOU LIKED HER. But anyways like i said some males are less aggresive, and the same goes for females, one of mine beat the crap out of my males. I would recommend maybe trying another male..Its sounds like Gil needs a biker chic |

It's helped me alot. And using this info from you guys, I've managed to get them to breed. Gill and Violet have gotten along well, and just 2 days ago they hated each other! Here's a full report: Violet and Gill were both under the bubble nest when Gill wrapped around her, (The embrace) and some eggs fell out of Violet!!!!! I was so shocked when I saw this!!! Then, they kept on going for about 10-14 times, each time Gill got the eggs and blew them into the bubble nest. When they stopped, Gill got very aggressive, so we took out Sapphire and Violet. Now Gill won't take his eyes off the nest and is constantly guarding it. Anyway, thanks to all the people that have replied, Trystianity, Callatya, ~ Sin ~, Joe Potato and John Stone for helping me!!!! |
