Its a VERY nice fish, i'd walk over hot coals for that type of masking on a wild colour! YUM! It might have been wild caught, the fish over there are contaminated with fighting strains as prize fighters are often released into waterways (or so i've read), but its not a true wild splendens strain. That is an incredible mask, i love it! Looking at the dorsal too, i'd take a punt that its a splendens x smaragdina. I'd keep treating it as if it was a wild though, as it seems to be quite withdrawn and displaying some wild behaviour. Is he geting along OK with his ladyfriends still? |

labrakitty Fish Addict Posts: 740 Kudos: 435 Votes: 9 Registered: 12-Nov-2004 | PROBLEMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HELP!!!!!!!!! I came home today to find my Cynthia (one of the females) with giant chunks taken out of her anal and caudal fin!!!!!:#( My other female perfectly fine, but Claudia went up to cynthia and started trying to nip her also flaring his fins and gills madly so I could tell there was 2 small nips out of his caudal fin too. Chloe (other female) was obviously trying to mate with claudia as he followed her everywhere, and they were trying to get rid of cynthia. I put cynthia in my floater and after that claudia starts sitting under it looking very sorry for himself. When chloe comes up to him he flares at her trying to show off. No signs of nipping. What should I do? Please need help ASAP!!!!!!:#( |

He is more 'fancy' than he looks. you *may* have two males, or just a dominant female, either way, its going to be carnage. None of the fish are conditioned for breeding, and this type of thing is what happens when the male wants to either protect his territory or breed and the female is reluctant. Add a little salt to the injured fishes water, and keep Claudia separated. Sounds like he has more spunk than he was letting on. Last edited by Callatya at 02-Sep-2005 03:16 |

Callatya Moderator The girl's got crabs! Posts: 9662 Kudos: 5261 Registered: 16-Sep-2001 | Yeah, it happens a lot when you try to breed with 2 females at once or with a female that isn't interested. I think you have probably discovered that keeping Claudia with his own harem isn't going to work too well He just seems too full of fight for it to work out Maybe having the two girls jarred and in the tank with him would work out? If you get the big 2L fizzy drink bottles, strip the labels off and poke holes through it with a soldering iron, you can have the girls in the same water and in view, without claudia or cynthia being able to tear at each other when they get upset. |

He said they have a very delicate and small digestive system, and the bristels and exo block it up, but he might be able to get over it if he lives long enough. labrakitty Fish Addict Posts: 740 Kudos: 435 Votes: 9 Registered: 12-Nov-2004 | I wasn't actually trying to breed them, teh vet told me to get 2 females for stimulation for claudia so he would get better. But instead of only stimulating him they decided to try and breed. I can buy deviders at my LFS I could also put one of two of them in another tank, which fish should go together? both females? |

labrakitty Fish Addict Posts: 740 Kudos: 435 Votes: 9 Registered: 12-Nov-2004 | UPDATE!!!!!!!! I caught Claudia flaring more than I have ever seen him before, and trying to what it looked like sort of eat Chloe (i though he was in love with). Claudia sort of tried to bite chloe on her back! I put chloe the biggest net i had, and claudia remains in the tank, with cynthia in the floater and chloe in the net. I have no intention of keeping fish in 2 litre bottles! who would do such a thing? Last edited by labrakitty at 03-Sep-2005 00:24 |

Callatya Moderator The girl's got crabs! Posts: 9662 Kudos: 5261 Registered: 16-Sep-2001 | Both females in one section, and Claudia in another. That is, if the females are both females. any chance of photos? The water flow will be fine if the dividers are mesh or drilled, so no need for more filters etc. Is it a cube tank? If so, you could divide it diagonally for a bit more interest If its a choice between 2L bottles and having your fish eaten alive, the 2L bottles start sounding like a good alternative. If its only temporary (which it sounds like it will be) then I think its worth considering in the meantime, depending on the size of your nets etc. |

labrakitty Fish Addict Posts: 740 Kudos: 435 Votes: 9 Registered: 12-Nov-2004 | It is a bow window tank. I know where i am dividing it so that is fine. It is a plastic divider will little squares cut out all over it. I will put it straight becuase if it is diagnal then i will see it tons, and that is the opposit of what I want. (not to see it too much). I will put the two females (both defintely females becuase they were living at the aquarium in a community tank with some other females too. sorry no pics yet. |

Callatya Moderator The girl's got crabs! Posts: 9662 Kudos: 5261 Registered: 16-Sep-2001 | Sounds like a plan Claudia should still get the benefit of the females to interact with that way, but they will be safe from his chompy mouth |
