I do 100% water changes on my 8 2.5 gallon tanks.:%)I would say if your doing weekly water changes (100% water changes) then you shouldn't need to run a filter. Besides most, and i stress most because Bettas tend to vary, do not like such a current produced by filters. Just wanted to specify I do my water changes weekly just as a precaution, I would keep my eye on it. Check the parameters of your water closely. Being that is only 1 gallon maybe a 100% water change every 4- 5 days might be more sufficient. [span class="edited"][Edited by jessnick42503 2004-09-08 14:33][/span] |

I have about 1/2" to an inch in gravel as well as a live plant (some kind of grass)....I have my eye on a cute little red betta at my lfs...thanks! Robin |

I have heard that if the current is too strong it can cause damage to it's fins so check and make sure the current isn't that strong. Some bettas apparently do not like the current, other people report that their bettas play in current or bubble walls. So, I presume it depends on the fish. I have a female betta in my 10g and I've never had a problem. To answer your other question, I do not know if a water change once a week will be sufficient. First, how much water are you changing? I would think that it would be better to do a partial change 2x per week but that's my opinion. As the smallest tank I have is a 5g it might be best to see what other people respond. HTH, Beth EDIT: Sorry if this doesn't make sense, by the time I was done typing there were more responses.... [span class="edited"][Edited by bscal 2004-09-08 14:27][/span] |

In a tank that size, no LESS then 100% water changes once a week. Depending on how quickly the water gets dirty you might need to do it every 4-5 days. I have a lot of animals here, and no tops to my betta bowls they get rather dirty pretty quickly, so I'm forced to keep up with that. |
