He constantly swims back & forth, back and forth, frantically, along the front of the 27 gallon tank he's in, which he shares with 4 neons. I have around 9 plants in there, a cave-type rock formation, and one bunch of floating plants in there. Am I not meeting his requirments? Or is this normal behaviour. He mkes me anxious! He looks like he is very unhappy...I thought gouramis were usually very peaceful fish. Would he be happier with another species of gourami in with him?

It's normal behavior. He's happy. It's kinda too late to get another dwarf male because this one was in there first and they would probably fight more often than not. It's better to add them at the same time so they're both new to the tank. You might try it if you removed him for a few days and them added both or more again at the same time.

You could add another gouramis and move around the decor. That should solve the problem and help aclimate the new tank mate with the other.

I am having the same problem with one of my gold gouramies. My heater broke a few days before he started. the temp of my water is around 73. Could the colder water be triggering this behavior?

My Neon Blue Dwarf Gourami does that all the time, swims back and forth, back and forth, back and forth...and he's the picture of health. I wouldn't worry.
