my boyfriend and I just noticed that oscar seems to have blackish stuff coming out of his gills, maybe it is because the two of us are protective parents but we are worried- is there reason or not help would be great!!

its not oozing or anything it looks almost like there is something pulsating that is attached to him like an organ or aomething- i know its not a very good description but that is the best we can do

It could be a gill parasite. What type of fish is it, as oscar is its name.

Is he flaring? Does he swim around with all his fins erect, when the black thing appears? That's normal.

Could it be a ruffley part of his gill cover that has gotten stuck? Get him to flare (use a mirror) and see if it is still in his gill.

What colour is he? Is the rest of his gill black? What type of tank do you keep him in? Does he have any tankmates?

I'm still willing to bet he's flaring...one of my boys, Platinum, has something similar, and you seem to be able to see the edges of his gills even when he's tired of fighting with his brother (Ghingas in the tank next to his) Don't worry about him, he's probably just got some really nice gillsheidi
