I am quite a simple Betta keeper and tend not to get any other type than Veiltails found at my LFS. However, I try to get the really pretty ones when they first get their shipment. Over the months i've gotten a not very nice black CT, but we still love him. Other than him all the others are your basic LFS type veiltails. But as of recently one of our guys (BTW all 8 are doing great!)fins are just getting beautiful and his tail seems to have a nice split down the middle. Now i know it's not a cut in his fins. I was just wondering if this is a legit DT or do I have a half breed like my wanna be CT?

This was him about 4 months ago when I got him. There is a difference, don't you think? Sorry about the pics being blurry, he's quite the active Betta

No, that's just a rip. Although it's possible looking at his fairly wide dorsal that he's carrying DT, it's not a gene that pops up at ten months, and in recessive fish the tail isn't at all different, only the dorsal.

The tail looks like it really grew out, so it might have just been fin damage. It's kinda hard to tell...

I'm pretty confident it's not a rip, and I know it's tough to tell with the blurry pics but it's just too perfect to be a rip. Plus there is nothing in the tank that could rip his fins or tankmates for that matter.

oh well i'll keep wishing for a CT or DT*****sigh*****

Doesn't look like a dt sorry.
Why don't you just buy a dt?

He is beautiful! But i dont think he is a DT. Correct me if im wrong, but doesnt a DT begin at birth and begins at the base of the tail(forming 2 completely separated tails)?

dt does begin at birth, however not all dt have good lobes and some arent seperated all the way, but it looks much different than that

Looks like a VT with an old injury to me too.

its a well healed split, and well, once they happen and heal over, they can just continue growing split, probably what happened here.

plus, the DT gene gives you a stocky bod and an elongated attached dorsal fin (think cichlid-esque) and this fish doesn't show either trait.

Sorry dude, but its a mighty fine VT! that colour is LOVELY!
