Some fish just like to jump, and many can find the smallest openings to get out of so make sure you close up any as best as you can. If you don't have a cover on your tank you may want to get one.

Why? Because it's fun. They like to leap. My red betta likes to take a leap now and then....poor thing just hits the aquarium hood. :plash - thwack - splash::

My older betta just likes to nap on the plants....and build bubble nests....

All betta's are different. Gotta love'em.

Fish don't jump to escape from water conditions, they do it for fun or as a fear reflex. Hatchetfish will jump to help them flee predators, arowanas will jump to capture above-water prey, and splash tetras will jump to lay their eggs above the water's surface. Fish have different reasons for jumping, though some species do it more than others. Bettas don't tend to be good jumpers; when they do jump, they usually are just having fun with it.

So, don't worry about your betta. It is probably just having a good time.

Bettas jump cause they can !
They're known as jumpers, consider the rice paddy as it starts to dry up...a betta would need to be able to leap from one drying up bit to a less drying up bit.

Make sure the tank is well covered to keep him from dissapearing....we had one jump from a covered 10 gallon in the office...we never did find his body. We even looked in the freezer .

I have a paradise fish (similar to betta) that loves to jump and he will even jump out of the water to eat shrimp from my hand! They are just showing off their character!
