trystianity Mega Fish Posts: 1028 Kudos: 926 Votes: 49 Registered: 20-Mar-2004 | Sorry, still looks male to me....The ventrals are really way too long to be female from the looks of him, even though he does have an egg spot, and the body shape just doesn't look effeminate to me (in betta terms of course). I'm sticking with my original opinion: Male plakat splendens... He may or may not have some imbellis in him, it really isn't uncommon with all the cross-breeding that goes on, but he looks a lot more splendens than anything to me, fairly stocky. His body is a little too streamlined even for a female imbellis, but like calla said, you'll know for sure in a few weeks or months or so if he starts looking like he might be carrying a few eggs in his belly. |

Stormy Big Fish Posts: 357 Kudos: 606 Votes: 81 Registered: 13-Mar-2004 | Heidi, I am sorry to say, but I am going to have to go with female on this one. She does have impressively long ventrals for a female, but I have had a few females with the longer ventrals. I also see the egg spot on her, and I have never had nor have I seen a male with an egg spot. I think what you have is a very pretty girl, but a girl none the less. If it were a male plakat, the chances would be very likely it would be very abrasive towards your other fish rather than happily dwelling in a community setting. I actually had one male plakat who jumped from his container to get into the container of my other male plakat and took such a huge hole out of his side that he never recovered from it, and I lost him. I would be willing to place money on the fact that you have yourself a female there. Any takers? LOL! |

houston Fish Guru You want what when? Posts: 2623 Kudos: 2462 Votes: 337 Registered: 29-Mar-2003 | thanks two tanks... Goofy would be a good name for Lucky also...I'm thinking it is the water in my tank, or maybe it is just who the owner isbut Lucky has discovered the great love for the "BUBBLES" he will chase the Dainty Corries, and Harlequins:%) out of the airstone stream and play in the bubbles. If he can't chase them out to his satisfaction he goes and plays in the HOB output stream...when he is through he seems to be huffing and puffing and goes to lay in the floating anacharis to rest till he feels like doing it again I'm really beginning to wonder what they are putting in the water, for the goofiness going on in that tank...heidi "I've got a great ambition to die of exhaustion rather than boredom." Two Tanks Big Fish Posts: 449 Kudos: 328 Votes: 13 Registered: 02-Jun-2003 | Heidi, I have a female just like yours. When I first got her, she was tiny and a dull gray. It took over a month to really find out what her true colors would be. I named her Goofy, because when I first got her, she would stand on her head and fall over backwards -- poor thing! Her body is now black with the red with green striped fins / tail and a faint dusting of green down the center of her back. She is a cutie. Good luck with her. |

houston Fish Guru You want what when? Posts: 2623 Kudos: 2462 Votes: 337 Registered: 29-Mar-2003 | Ok as you will remember I picked up this unusual type of betta last weekend. Some people said it was a he some said it was a she, some said it was a plakat, others disagreed... Well, I've now moved Lucky into the 125 with the Neons, Emperors, Harlequins, Danties, me But, I still have no idea if it is a male or female, nor do I know what kind of betta he is...So here is a good desc So what is he/she? Oh and he is about 1.5 inches long, and maybe 1/2 up and down...infact that over there as my new avatar is Lucky... houston Fish Guru You want what when? Posts: 2623 Kudos: 2462 Votes: 337 Registered: 29-Mar-2003 | OK so noone has any idea what he is:%)be shim's a betta of some sort Right now he is in Betta heaven!!!He's swimming around that 125 tank, acting a fool flairing what flair he has at the sides because of the reflection...he's swimming and playing in the airstone current...no it wasn't an accident, I thought so the first time also, but he kept going back flaires at it, and then dives in head first (got it from the Dainty Corries?) I need to take the camera home tonight, as he has changed colors The fins are blood red (like blood that is beginning to dry) and his body is almost black! But you can still see his horizontal lines...if he hits the light right he has an irridescent blue spot on his tail in the middle, and the finnage seems to be outlined on the edges with black... As long as he stays his happy, lucky self he is fine in the 125...wish i could find another, and knew if he was one of those that could be kept with others of the same species ***shrug*** but oh well...post pics later...heidi "I've got a great ambition to die of exhaustion rather than boredom." Callatya Moderator The girl's got crabs! Posts: 9662 Kudos: 5261 Registered: 16-Sep-2001 | It *may* be an imbellis cross, with the positioning of the red markings, but its thr wrong shape to be a full imbellis IMO. By looking at the length of the ventrals in comparison to the body, I think its going to turn out to be a male. |
