My bettas just spawned today =) I think the female was with the male for 3 days before the spawned. I wasn't even paying attention to them but I saw the female out from hiding and a minute later they spawned. That wasn't the first time but yeah, I'm so happy... that female was the only one I raised from my last batch. (and the first single fish I raised from a tiny fry to adulthood, w/o parents) I bought her a really nice male, she's worth it. I'm just so shocked, the first time I bred bettas, like 8 months ago... the parents tore each other up and later died. The male I have now is so gentle, he chases her but never nipped her fins. The spawning is over and they are both in PERFECT condition. (err.. I still can't believe it, all fins are intact and no injuries...) I took the female out and fed her worms. The male is still tending the eggs. =)

I started my fry on Liquifry. They may or may not have eaten it but they sure loved these miro little white worm thingys crawling on the glass. No more deaths, still 15 and i'm feeding frozen bbs. The kids love to watch the whole process and what to do it again!

Thanks everyone!

So far so good, many of them have died but I think that's normal still like 100 fry in the tank and they are growing really fast, I was concerned on the feeding issue this guys are REALLY tiny and I don't have access to any tiny live food, so I went with wardley's Small Fry, they don't love it, but they are eating, when they are a little bit bigger I'll start with moine (water fleas) that is about the smallest live food I can get a hold.

I have also just had my first little Betta babies hatch. Mine are now 3 weeks old. They also hatched in 24hours. The male Skaifey (he is red & my son named him after his fav racing car driver) was very attentive, to the point he kept gathering free swimmers and taking them back to the nest and i felt he was injuring them. I had great loss of fry so took him out & let him recover,Snow (his white wife)riped most of his fins. I now have about 15 very strong fry feeding on liquifry and frozen bbs

Ok wait a minute!! In all the literature i read about breeding bettas, it sayd the eggs hatched in 48 hours, and last night when i took a look at the tank they are already hatched!!!! is this normal??? isn't it to soon?? They only took 24 hours!!

HELP!!!!!

They all seem ok, and the male is extra active making them all stay in the surface, the buble nest is almost gone.

I totally agree with you! its more than awesome, I still cant get over it, and the devotion to the nest of the male its still breathtaking, he hasnt rest since yesterday always keeping neat and clean, blowing new bubbles and picking up the eggs that have felled. Making really neat fin movements to make water circulate the nest. WOW!

I also read that, that it was the female who got all battered, then I found several articles that said that there are some females that are very aggressive and that they can even kill the male.

My poor girl ended up looking like a Hawaiian skirt! practically no tail, and all the remaining fins are shredded, she is now on a separate bowl with medication, and she's looking fine. She ate like crazy too.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! Many years ago (when my adult kids were still small) I too was privileged with witnessing the miracle of betta reproduction.... AWESOME is not a strong enough word to fully describe the process! Though it happened years ago - I still remember every detail vividly!
One thing I would like to ask though.... In most of the articles I read today, it's mentioned how the female gets so "torn up" during the mating process.... Yet I recall my male getting the worst of the damage! His lovely streaming fins became considerably shorter and uneven..... while my female remained virtually unchanged... What was your personal experience in this area?

Hi!!

Well I'm so excited but I don't have anyone here who cares LOL (not fish people)

But today in the afternoon, I saw how my bettas started to spawn!!! it's the most incredible thing I've ever watched!! I've seen discus, and angels spawn but never this ritual as the bettas did, it was also my first attempt to breed them and I know how lucky I am!! I know there are still things that could go wrong to this point, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

I'm particularly amazed at the males devotion to his parenting job, I knew what they were supposed to do, but I never imagined it to what point they could do it, he never left an egg hit the bottom, he is tending the nest none stop since they started.

Up until now, I'm not sure if I should feed him or not, he seems hungry, but I was advised not to.

Well I just felt like shearing this experience, I'm so amazed with it, that it's even hard to try and put it in words!

Congrats on your first spawn. Now just be careful they don't get a chill, as a slight bit of cold can wipe them out. I think also you should remove the male once all the eggs are hatch, or he will eat them. Most males don't eat while spawning and looking after the eggs, so he would be very hungry by now. Your eggs hatching in 24hrs must mean that you have very good water conditions. Don't overfed and pollute the water. Make sure the water stays clean. Betta fry can easy get Velvet. A disease cause by cold/pollute water. Good Luck.

that's not good. i still have the father with the kids... it's been almost a week now that the male has been with the eggs. most of the fry doesn't seem to swim perfectly yet so i left the father in.
