Male betta tankmate | |
sirbooks Moderator Sociopath Posts: 3875 Kudos: 5164 Votes: 932 Registered: 26-Jul-2004 | Nah, I've heard just the opposite. Supposedly, male bettas do not like other fish with long fins. They tend to get jealous. So, they like to 'remove' these other long-finned fish from their territory. In that small of a tank, you really don't have a lot of options. You could go for three or four ottos, and... hmmm. Well, that's all I can think of for right now. Keep in mind, any tankmates should be peaceful, short-finned, and happy with the betta's preferred temperature (hopefully you have a heater). I'm sure someone will be along behind me with more ideas. |

If they get to close to him he'll chase them. But the Cherry barbs are too fast for him. He can't catch up. So, he gives up. It's really funny. My friends and I watch my tank sometimes. The Cherry Barbs will literally swim circles around the betta. So, I would recommend Cherry barbs. Two at the most for a 6 gallon. |

Betta will occationally chase everyone when it's feeding time, but he has never bit anyone. I also have a male Betta in a 5 gallon with 5 male guppys. He doesn't even know they exist, BUT, I had another Male Betta who lived happily with male and female guppies for many months, then one day he bit the tail off of 1 of my female guppys, CLEAN OFF!. So you never know. she grew her tail back, but it was black b4 he bit it off and it grew back with almost no color in it. He got his own tank after that! |

beachbabe13185 Hobbyist Posts: 61 Kudos: 65 Votes: 68 Registered: 21-Jun-2004 | I have had a male betta (and a female at different times of course) in a ten gallon tank with male guppies and had no problems with the male betta being agressive. my male guppy would chase around my betta, so i guess it just would depend on the personality of the betta(mine was a wimp) and the guppy. on the contrary my female was not nice and had to be removed right away and put back in her own tank. Hope this might help, Amanda |

Ive heard guppies can be kept with bettas but im a bit skeptical due to their long fins. Any suggestions for an interesting tankmate(s)? just curious -andrew |

Danioman Fingerling Posts: 29 Kudos: 20 Votes: 0 Registered: 27-May-2004 | My betta has recently been joined by a (currently) small pleco in a 5 gallon eclipse tank. All is well, everyone seems to be getting along for 2 days or so. Many may not suggest it, but if you have somewhere else for the Pleco to go when he gets large, it may be worth a shot? |
