Nah, I've heard just the opposite. Supposedly, male bettas do not like other fish with long fins. They tend to get jealous. So, they like to 'remove' these other long-finned fish from their territory.

In that small of a tank, you really don't have a lot of options. You could go for three or four ottos, and... hmmm. Well, that's all I can think of for right now. Keep in mind, any tankmates should be peaceful, short-finned, and happy with the betta's preferred temperature (hopefully you have a heater). I'm sure someone will be along behind me with more ideas.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

Have you try goruami(Yes I know, I misspel it) Betta and gourami come from the same region, breathe the same way, and they are pretty. Get a dwarf one if you have a small tank.

ive had females that were much much prettier then most males
ive had luck keeping a male in a tank 10g with 4 females with no problems ive also had 2 males together in a 10 gallon community tank with no problems the odd flare at feeding time but that was it no contact was ever made both males lived together for over 8 months then i gave them away ive had females kill everything i put with them as of males doing jsut the same so yes the fish determines its social abilities

I have a Male betta with two Cherry Barbs in one of my 10g's. They get along. But, i must say, the betta likes his "personal space". If they get to close to him he'll chase them. But the Cherry barbs are too fast for him. He can't catch up. So, he gives up. It's really funny. My friends and I watch my tank sometimes. The Cherry Barbs will literally swim circles around the betta. So, I would recommend Cherry barbs. Two at the most for a 6 gallon.

A female betta may work but arnt even half as colorful imo as the males. I doubt they would bother it but since guppies have a lot of color mabe they would work.

I guess to sum all of this up is to say, "That every Betta is different. And what might work for one, it won't for another".

I have a 20 gal long, with 1 Male Betta and 4 Dwarf Platys, 2 Gouramis & one Rainbow fish. Betta will occationally chase everyone when it's feeding time, but he has never bit anyone.
I also have a male Betta in a 5 gallon with 5 male guppys. He doesn't even know they exist, BUT, I had another Male Betta who lived happily with male and female guppies for many months, then one day he bit the tail off of 1 of my female guppys, CLEAN OFF!. So you never know. she grew her tail back, but it was black b4 he bit it off and it grew back with almost no color in it. He got his own tank after that!

I agree with wats been said. The male betta takes up a lot of room in a tank as small as a 6gallon. The only thing i could think of is ottos like books said and a dwarf frog which is not a fish but hey.

well all bettas are different not just on the outside but on the inside as well, if u have a male betta that is always nervous then adding in any other fish might not be a good idea. how ever if u have a male that is aggressive then also adding anyother fish might be a bad idea. if u have a mild betta then good fish would be cories, maybe if your bettas is mild to shy betta then tetras might be good, and barbs too. or you can always just leave ur tank the way it is.

Just leave your male Betta on his own or just add an Apple Snail. :88):88):88)

I have had a male betta (and a female at different times of course) in a ten gallon tank with male guppies and had no problems with the male betta being agressive. my male guppy would chase around my betta, so i guess it just would depend on the personality of the betta(mine was a wimp) and the guppy.
on the contrary my female was not nice and had to be removed right away and put back in her own tank.

Hope this might help,

Amanda

How about an apple snail or two? In my own experience, ghost shrimp have ended up as dinner.

Ok so I have a 6g eclipse tank with 1 male betta and 4 ghost shrimp. Ive heard guppies can be kept with bettas but im a bit skeptical due to their long fins. Any suggestions for an interesting tankmate(s)?
just curious

My betta has recently been joined by a (currently) small pleco in a 5 gallon eclipse tank. All is well, everyone seems to be getting along for 2 days or so. Many may not suggest it, but if you have somewhere else for the Pleco to go when he gets large, it may be worth a shot?

I prefer to keep my bettas alone for their own sake. When you invest as much money as I have into bettas, you don't want to risk their health on a 2 dollar snail.
